Hi all,

Not an E60 M5 but has the heart!

As some of you know I´m rebuilding my track car, a 1989 E30 M3.
It used to have a S50B32 SC but a friend of mine planted the crazy idea of installing an S85 into the M3 in my brain.

Sold the S50 and started collecting parts from the aforementioned friend ;)
New owner picking S50 up - will go into an E30 316:

Some background on that story & the car here: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e3.../109825-my-other-supercharged-bmw-rngtoy.html

Now this project went into a bit of a sleep mode while I finished up the E39 respray/refresh: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/542034-refresh-inside-out.html

Now the E39 is finished, this is back on track.

To jumpstart it and move it quicker along I decided to buy a complete S85 engine to use as MKI (sleeved/stroked/forged build will come later as MKII):

It´s done 113.000 km. I will change the rod bearings just to be sure.

Need to finish tearing the car down and have the shell blasted - then start the rebuild.

So the plan is to have the following setup:

Ca. 560hp with remap/open exhaust, stock ecu
DCT transmission
Dry sump oil system (the one I used on the S50, need to make a pan)
Stronger half shafts
Stronger drive shaft
Stock diff rebuilt
Fully welded in cage from Custom Cages
Old brakes will be used (Movit/Porsche)
Old suspension will be used (H&R Nurburgring spec coilovers)

Will post updates here for those interested - hope to have the car ready before summer 2018 - at least that is the optimistic view!!! :)

Will then take it back to the Ring and have some fun at my favorite track!

Well, not everyone likes the idea of putting a different engine in that car and alot of people don´t understand why I put a DCT either.

But I think it´s going to be a super combo.

One of the best looking/handling cars ever from BMW, with one of the best engines mated to the best transmission so far.

Looking forward to some updates on this.

I'm taking my e61 M5 to the Ring in July. I remember seeing your e30 there when I hadn't e39 M5

Cheers

Finally delivered - properly packed!!!!

Started immediately checking & changing the rod bearings and they certainly needed replacing.
Upper #10 is pretty bad. Crank 100% ok though.

nice to be able to change them with the engine out of the car :smile
True, much nicer. A friend of mine that just completed this job in a car on a lift commented on that also ;)

Definitely subscribed !! I'm doing an s85 into my e31 this fall and would love to work with you on MSS65 CAN manipulation!
I'm useless at this stuff - I have a couple of friends that will be doing all the ECU & electronic work.

Happy to assist. I'm quite familiar, we're working on a Motec implementation of the E6x CAN bus.

I have done smoke good reading about you Jim and would love to contribute as I educate myself more about 2 major aspects of this MSS65 and MSS60 DMEs: building a CAN simulator box that is able to trick the ECU into thinking the rest of the car is there and 2. Downloading the code directly from the DME and modifying the hex to suit our swap needs. This is going to be, by far, the most complicated part of any s85 or s65 swap.

These S85 and S65 motors are the next generation of swappable motors. Right now it's S62 and S54, but cracking the MSS65 is going to be a huge step for the community to make these swaps much more affordable (not really counting the cost of the engines themselves or mandatory maintenance actions once purchased).

How come no valve stem issues in s85 like all other bmw motors??

Bmw just put brand new n63 motor in our x5!!! Had low km but timing chain stretched and block out of round and leaking valve stems and worn piston rings
