As we have seen the last few months coding has taken off! More and more people are offering windows up with remote, full bright angel eyes with headlights on, and more. Well here is the next step. Reflashing modules!

Euro smg software features:
-4k rpm launch control with auto shift at red line in S6
-Default S5 / D1 settings from cold start (US default S3/D3)
-Smoother / quicker shifts between gears

I didn't make a video however you can find several examples of it on youtube, here is one:

Attached is a guide made by terraphantm on m3forum. You can use the exact same process however instead of using E46 files you need E60 files and instead of using the #ZB number for SMGII CSL use one of the above.

Besides already flashing many E46 M3's with different tunes I have also done Rnydyman M5 with the euro smg software who i'm sure will give you his thoughts!

Hope everyone finds this information useful!

Vodyk, the modules you are updating using the K+DCAN Cable are only modules that do not have the MOST (Fiber Optic) connections correct? Or have you figured a way to update versions of any module without an Ops or Opps head? (OBDI connection and Fiber Optic MOST cable in one)?

Great post by the way. And to think I spent $$$ on a tune and the SMG SW to do exactly what you describe.

Thanks

Won't they charge you labor for this if you're car isn't under warranty?

All the modules will communicate with k+dcan however some wont update (like CIC) ecu/smgIII update in about 30 seconds even over OBD

Yea they will charge for labor, i was more explaining how its all the same software and if you had a friend tech they could hook you up. I don't think most dealerships will be game for doing it.

OK, that's what I thought (What modules you can update sw versions without an Ops Head). Just wanted to be sure. The CIC is only one example. There are others. Thought you may have discovered a way to use the K+DCAN for all module updates, MOST or not.

If by chance you ever do, or hear of any tips, please post same. I've been trying, but its too slow without an Ops Head and I didn't want to risk a partial load without knowing if the results would be positive.

Thanks

Will this over write a previous ECU tune?? THANKS for the post!! :applause:
It will not touch the engine ECU. It will only change/update the SMG controller.

Great write-up! I am saving this to my M6 tech archives for the future. Too bad this doesn't allow for changing tunes in the ECU as well. It could make for some interesting developments in the DIY community if it did.

Yes ask for #ZB7842210. Hopefully you are good terms with your SA/Tech as they will be taking a leap of faith with you. When I do this I confirm that the SMG module is running one of:

M6 US
7840485 (ver 1)
7841408 (ver 2)
7842214 (ver 3)

So that I can flash back to the current software if something is wrong and so that I feel the numbers are matching as they should. If you are running a version other then any of these numbers I wouldn't flash till we look into the unknown.

any ideas what the differences in versions are?

any data on how the shifts are quicker? (e.g. does the software keep the transmission valves open shorter... does it synchronize quicker, etc)

Highly interested in this!

Also, any early-adopters that can provide feedback on differences between their US spec SMG software vs. the new/proposed Euro spec numbers provided?

Thank you for the interesting & informative thread!

Simply the first version is how the cars came originally. They made updates for various reasons and I don't have the patch notes. Some people feel after being updated at a dealership the shifts got slower for warranty reasons. They may have improved reliability, I would error on using the latest version.

The number is what tune it is. If he just updates your SMG it will go to the latest US spec software. Once setup the tune took 30-60 seconds.....
