I've read the threads and I've put around 35K on my vehicle with little to no issues. I was driving south and about 1 hour into my drive I got the infamous cog of death :( The vehicle put itself into Neutral and I pulled to the side of the road. I was going about 75-80..so it was a bit of a shock when it desided to go to neutral. My BMW warranty expired on 3/11...so exactly 30 days after my warranty expired..but luckily I do have an extended warranty..so we will see. The dealer said there are a bunch of errors but they are leaning toward a hydro failure. I'm waiting for information but anyone have an idea of what my SA is trying to say when it's a "Hydro Failure"? They first told me it was an internal leak which was a shock to me. I haven't had any problems at all with my vehicle beyond cosmetic issues like my side bolster motor and a parking sensor...so this was a shock to me and my passenger. I thought I'd share as I was one of those "Red Cog will never happen to me" people :(

Hydro failure as in... hydraulic failure? SMG pump? :confused2

Probably. I should hear more tomorrow. They first told me a fluid leak (internally) and now it's the "Hydro" failure. I'll have more info soon. The rough thing is no issues at all leading up to this.

Thats the thing with pumps, only some have warning signs (pump whine :redflag:) and others just...decide to go at a traffic light at 1am on a sunday. (fuel pump ''-_-) grrrrrrr :grrrr: :reallypissed: :mad:

Ok. I just heard from my dealer. It seems like it's the hydrolic actuator (AKA Hydro SMG mechanism). I asked how much and to my surprise...$5500. They are waiting to hear back from my extended warranty as this is a complete internal component and they need to send out an adjuster for this repair. I'm posting this as I'm awaiting my warranty to finish the claim. My problem is that I've heard from numerous individuals with this SMG pump problem...and all around 35K miles regardless of the year on the vehicle. My car is out of the BMW warranty only 30 days on the dot. I feel bad that my extended warranty will need to fund this repair when BMW NA should fund this as it is unacceptable to fail below 50K. If that hydrolic piece will only last 35K...I can expect to visit this again in 3 years or so. I don't find this acceptable by any means and it's really unfair for an aftermarket warranty to have to fund this when it's a "common" issue affecting multiple cars. I have two which replied to the thread but the big question is how many more are out there?

Will BMW CPO cover this? for sure when I hit 35K miles I will be on CPO warranty... I would hate for them to be able to argue that CPO warranty wont cover this...

Wow! That is an insane marked up price. BMWNA's MSRP price for the part, 21542282998, is $3,273.73, and Tischer BMW (getbmwparts.com) sells that part for $2,618.98. So even if you pay BMWNA list price, that leaves $2,200 labor? They are making boatloads off this transaction. Their dealer cost on that part is probably somewhere near $2100-2200.

Good luck. If you have to pay, definitely fix the pricing shake-down. I'm guessing the warranty company will never settle for that amount (sort of like how medical insurance works).

Yes I was pretty shocked to hear over 5K to repair this. An adjuster is coming out tomorrow to look at my car. This should be covered by my warranty as it's a completely internal part which failed and it's not a wear and tear item. They will most likely get the price down to a reasonable number but I didn't realize that the part is 3K by itself. They have to drop the transmission and all so I know there is quite a bit of labor involved. I miss my car and I'm hoping to get this fixed soon :crying2:

Hope your Beast gets well soon. I went through exact same thing a month ago. Took about a 2 days for approval, two days for parts, and two days repair. The good news is that you should be as good as new once you get car back. Cost was about the same they quoted you and I also had to wait for an adjuster for approval. Sounds like a similar experience. Good luck!

hi . I got the RED COG in my M5, i had no faults with my car it ran smooth , no gear slipping no loud bangs.
Then all of a sudden got in to it and it wouldnt go in reverse, tried 1st, still wouldnt work.
can anyone help and tell me what it could be. p.s no smell of oil and no oil leaks. Thanks.

I just made 64k a few days ago. On Friday, I got the red cog, failsafe mode, car may not restart message. Ir would not shift out of first. Pulled over, stopped, HUD said car was in 1st. Pulled shifter to N, it showed N. turned off the engine, it switched by itself 1st as soon as i pushed the stop button and would not restart as advertised.

Tow truck time. This is the second tow for SMG lockup in little ofver a year. Last time it was a throw out bering explosion. I don't know what it is this time. No smell or visible leaks. BMW had the console tore up when I went to get my things out this weekend. They have to call BMW NA for assistance. Hope this is not another 5 week repair like it was with the throw out berring...

Any update on this? Could this be due to a worn clutch?

wow!~ all these messages/comments are concerning me...
mine is currently at the shop. my clutch was replaced one year ago and a few weeks ago, it started slipping.
took the car in for the slippage, the fan makes a noise (like when one puts a playing card on the spokes of the bicycle), also my daytime lamp (right side) died.
SA said that the extended warranty that I purchased does not cover that, also, that their "might" be a sensor; regarding the transmission that is at fault but
he is not sure if it's covered and that he would talk to his foreman. I said, that I would call BMW-NA about the warranty aspect, because after all they were the ones
that replaced the clutch. He just said to wait before calling BMW-NA. I just hope to get it resolved. I would REALLY like to keep my car. OH YEAH..i have 80K miles on mine
and I did not have any -Zero- issues until about 70K-

also, not to thread jack, BUT-- do you all notice that the temp goes past the midway point frequently on your M5's?
I had the radiator flushed because mine is going past the mid-line, not sure why. even after the flush, same.. :(
that was another reason why I took it.

I suppose my question (s) would be,
they should cover the sensor (if thats all it is) right?
Also, they should cover the daytime lights, correct?

Just out of curiosity, have you ever changed out the transmission and the SMG fluid before?

I have 35k miles and they are telling me I need a new clutch. I had a reduced engine message and went to the dealer and got the spark plugs and a coil replaced and picked up the car. Well I didnt even make it home, and see the red cog which I have never gotten before and nor have I had any clutch slippage, I did get the ocassional judder but now i wonder what happened to my car since they had it for 2 weeks in for repair for the coil and spark plugs. Now they are telling me I need a new clutch and only have 10% left. What should I do?

And it locked up again!

Let us know what the cause is as I have had a similar problem and same message and was told my clutch is gone but having a hard time to believe. Did you have your clutch and flywheel changed at either of your previous red cogs?

Clutch was changed when the throw out berring exploded (exact words from my service advisor). I doubt it is my clutch disc. It would be too soon. I think they would have told me that in May if it was.
