I've just ordered my new 2001 M5 with the fold-down rear seat option, just as on my current '97 540i, even though I have never folded down the rear seat. Lately I have begun notice a subtle, but nevertheless irritating squeek from the rear of the passenger compartment, probably from the rear seats. I also note complaints on this message board about squeeks and rattles coming from the back of the M5's. To what extent is the fold down seat responsible? Should I try to cancel this option before production?

Richard,

No. Keep the rear seat fold-down option. I've now had 2 2000 M5 with this option. I did have a tiny squeak in the first one, but it had nothing to do with the fold-down seats and was incredibly easily remedied.

You never know when you might have to do something practical (like carry something large) in your M5.

All the best,

Robert
