Some reports recently indicated that door-mounted airbags can pose more danger than safety to small children. Does anyone know of an authoritative discussion of the age at which kids can safely occupy seats with such airbags?

In Europe the rear airbags come activated from the factory, but in the (litigious) USA you have to specify them as an option and sign a child safety disclaimer before BMW activate them.

On BMW's equipped with rear side airbags (i.e. 2001 and 2003 M5's by default, 2002 models if specifically ordered), only the door airbags are deactivated as delivered as above. The rear head airbags (HPS) are activated all the time just like the other airbags.

Yes, its size and weight. Often we shortcut that by saying approximate age. Good question on kiddies.
