Anyone know a place in the Bay Area where they have a wide selection of radar detectors? eg: Passport Solo.

Thanks.

Yo gotta go with the Valentine1. I've got the passport SRX in my Z8 and the Valentine 1 in my truck and I'd rather have the V1. It's nice knowing where they are! Jonny

The V-1 / StealthOne combo is unbeatable. With the new StealthOne firmware, you can program the alert speed, , i.e., stay silent until >25MPH. Very nice!

This board is so biased to V1 it is not a fully reliable source of data to make a decision.

However, there are a few posts with good, hard data... you need to search.

To compound the problem, Valentine does not cut deals with review sites to 'click thru' sales, so it is not well received on many "best detector" sites.

After much research, I went with....

V1 + Stealth One.

For me, I decided even if the V1 was no better, the integration was worth it.

Having just gone from a passport to a v1 I must agree it is simply better. I also have a built in k40 with laser diffuser (came with the car) and I still went out and bought the v1. Gives me MUCH more time then the k40. Like a good 5 seconds in most cases.

It seems to me, based on various readings around, that the V1 and Passport 8500 X50 are both excellent at sniffing out radar from a greater distance than they can read your speed -- which is really what you're looking for. The Passport has the advantage of smaller size and the V1 has the advantage of the arrows.

But this is a very V1-biased site (not a bad bias, in most respects) so take your feedback with that understanding.

The 8500 also has the advantage of integrating with their ZR3 laser diffuser product which has been shown to be fairly effective at neturalizing that threat as well.

(P.S. I can get a group price on the 8500 X50 if people are interested, but based on my experiences trying to get a group buy together for a laser jammer, there doesn't appear to be a big pool of buyers out there at this time...)

Biased toward the V1. Well I wouldn't say that. It is just that the V1 is preferred based on real world usage. There are a number of threads on this subject so do a search and find some interesting reading.

I have an Escort 8500 X50 which I purchased to compare to the V1. I use the V1 in all my cars. I compared the X50 to the V1 in the real world - on trips down I-95 from New Jersey to Florida and back - highway and local driving. I documented my results in one of those other threads. My preference is the V1. I did not find the X50 to be better at detection than the V1. I even had several instances of the X50 not detecting until it would have been too late. The arrows on the V1 make all the difference. It is important (IMO) to know where the police are hiding. For radar detection the V1 gets my vote (and my money). For laser detection (and jamming) the Lidetak or Blinder should be considered.

Price-wise the V1 is not cheap. It is only offered by Valentine. You will find the X50 on sale (sometimes at a discount) on some of the websites that claim to do unbaised testing of radar detectors. Funny how the detectors they are selling always come out best.

I spent weeks researching this issue. I had the old Passport and went with the V1 and Stealth One instead. I am very pleased. I strongly recommend the V1 and the Stealth One if you are so inclined. I hard wired them myself with no problems.

bay area... back to back comparison in my car with the Escort mounted right next to it, the V1 was bar none the better choice of the 2.

I purchased and installed the V1, Escort 8500 and Solo for about three weeks in my M5. The Escort 8500 and Solo performances where not even close to the V1 under all driving conditions.
I returned both the Solo and Escort for a full refund and ordered two more V1 for my cars.

That settles it. I will go ahead and get the V1. It seems like it's the only way to go in terms of radar detectors. As always, thanks everyone for the help.

I have the K40 and the escort X50 does anyone know why the K40 is so delayed? I expected the K40 to be better but got a ticket with it and now im running a hardwired X50 and a k40. the K40 picks up a little quicker a few times out of a bunch but mostly its the X50.

Can someone explain the Stealthone to me? I have seen it is a little display that you can mount wherever you like, but you still have to have the main unit on the window right? If so, what's the point?

Yes, you still need the V1 (on the windshield). But for starters,

- the V1 is blacked out completely, so is more stealth
- because you don't have to actually look at the V1, you can mount it to the windshield over on the passenger side of the mirror (more stealth yet, no interference with driver's sun visor)
- Display is moved to your M5's instrument cluster, a far more natural, and useful location for this information
- a ton of programming options, my favorite being a speed-selective muting (for example, no alarm (noise) if going under 25m.p.h.)
- steering wheel mute button - fast convenient way to hush the V1
- steering wheel button for V1 Mode selection (A, L, l)
- it can remove the dreaded "ACCEPT" NAV screen

There are more advantages, these are the ones that immediately popped into mind. It's a great mod, one of my favorites.
