Really fast, which side of car is the starter on? driver or passenger. Does all the plastic underbody stuff need to go? My car is making clicking sounds when I try to start it, the engine is not turning over. It just did this ALL OF A SUDDEN OUT OF NO WHERE! Happy that it did it in my back yard lol!!! Thanks

Clicking sounds is battery, I think. I'd start at the battery first (and sorry, I'm not sure which side the starter is on...but hope this post helps).
I tried to jump start it. With the other car hooked up and running i tested the voltage at my batter and it read 14v. That should have started it right?

There's no way you can simply access the starter.

No offense, but if you have to ask where it is and if you have to take the plastics off, I doubt its a good idea that you do your own diagnosing/wrenching.

Again, no offense man.

Oh, and the starter is always on the driver's side (EUR or US.)

To be honest, I have no idea...I'm not all that mechanically inclined, but I just know that if there is a clicking noise, it's usually the battery. Sorry I can't be more of a help.

14V is plenty to start the car if you have appropriate amperage. You can't start it with a Yugo, you'll need another large V8. You probably need to rev the donor vehicle.

clicking with no additional noise is typically the starter solenoid. These can be replaced by a competent mechanic.

No offense, but if you can't locate the starter on your own, replacing the solenloid is probably not something you should attempt.

If you do decide, please enlist the help of another mechanically inclined friend and double-check everything you are thinking about doing with each other.

the clicking noise is the noise I get when my battery is flat.

I jump mine with my girlfriend's corsa, I have to leave it hooked up with the corsa running for a while, then try to turn her over with my girlfriend sitting in her car, revving the engine to 2500 rpm.

hth.

the starter is on the passengers side (in the middle off the car but passengers side)

remove the undertray section 2 and 3 so not the bumper piece.they lock with sort off screws.remove the panel and you can see it then where the gearbox is connected on the engine. its a large piece that has a black cylinder on it.its tucked away so you cant see it from just looking at it .its located just near the front rollbar under the car, passengersside.

you can easy diy it iff you have some tools.

you just have to unplug two electronic connectors and remove a heatschield thats on the starter and then you can remove the starter completely. you can acces it without removing any other things.the starter is bolted on with two bolts.

i did it myself a couple off months ago in under 45 minutes, and im not a mechanical genius.

part number was...1 729 981. and it operates from 12V../official from bosch.i can give you that part number two iff you like. i have the old starter in my garage.its my trophee..haha

iff you want a second hand one off a salvage yard for instance, in these cars its the same part.

but like others say, i would check the battery first and the starter solenoid. a starter thats broken freespins most off the time.. clicking is most off the time to little juse/voltage or the solenoid..

try to messure the voltage on the battery without any hook up. iff its 11,8V or under 11,8V its the battery that doesnt give enough.it has to be 12,2V/12,4V i thought in rest mode.

I second that as well. Good detail. It is a little bit of a pain to remove the starter. Of course if you have a car lift, it would go much faster. :)

Nerio thanks for all your help!

Yea after my first reply I found out which side the clicking was on. I asked which side the starter was on because visually you can't locate it. And day light was running out so I used the best resource I have ( I love this forum =) to speed things up. No offense taken =) BTW, I am a certified aircraft mechanic, working on Gulfstream private jets lol so I kinda know which way a bolt loosens.

Anyways, after a bit of trouble shooting indeed it was the battery. Got a new free battery (duralast) under warranty from autozone. First it sounded like a stuck starter, like my old car, all we did was take a 2x4, hammer and give it some love taps and it'll start turning. Refusing to get under the car cuz I just to a shower, I busted out the multimeter and ran some readings.

Thanks for all your help guys, and JizJizJiz you are teh winner!!!! THanks!!

Don't expect for the "duralast" to last long.

Every 10th start or so. I am unable to start the car. All the lights go on pre-start as usual, alternator , charging system, battery all checked out good. Wondering it it could just be a bad battery ground? Every 10th start of so it wont even tick over, then turn everything off and always starts second or third time... Any ideas?

Yes, it clicks, but this happens very rarely . like 1 time very 20-30 starts.... Anyway. I was under the car changing out the transmission bushings and the starter was right under the engine. Its very easy to get to and replace. No idea why you would want to change the starter by taking out the inner passenger wheel covering as someone mentioned in a previous post....
