When driving around town, or in liesurely highway driving, the speed of the SMG lll shifting, even in drivelogic mode 5 seems somewhat slow. For example, from the time I pull the shift paddle until the revs change to accomodate the next gear, there seems to be a delay of almost 1 second.

With more aggressive throttle input the shifts are much faster.

Is this other people's experience as well?

Yes the shifts are slower at lower rpm.

Have a read of this thread (SMG Woes) from the other week where it's discussed that SMGIII seems slower than SMGII on the E36 M3 < 4,000rpm. Above 4,000rpm or so the M5's SMG III comes to life.
