Hi guys hoping for some insight into life with an F10. I’ve never owned an M car to date and would be grateful for some advice.
My budget will be around 25-30k for the initial purchase.
The main question would be extended warranty etc. Is there a preferred warranty product in protecting against melt down for these cars? I’ve read posts where people are faced with enormous bills for full engine replacements.
Any direction would be very much appreciated

Hi gixxer thanks for the reply. I’m from north east England. I currently have an Alfa Giulietta QV and an insignia VX line saloon tow car.
Pending the M5 towing credentials I’d like to hold on to the Alfa.
I’ve recently driven my cousins M4 which has given me the urge to get in on the act. We need the practicality of 4 doors and the M3 is a bit smaller than I’d like.

The cars I’ve owned in the past have been nowhere near as expensive to run and repair as I’d expect an F10 to be. With this in mind the main question would be do I need to be smart in the way I prepare for future problems in the way of tried and tested insurance products? Or do most of you guys just go with the flow and take the hits as they come?

Hi Richie,

There's a couple of folks here from oop North - I'm not as you can see, so I can't recommend an indie up that way. I would certainly suggest that it's worth driving down either to Phil Crouch at CPC in Amersham (Bucks) or Jags at BM Sport in Bexley (Kent) if you can't find one.

My F10 is, as far as I'm advised, the only one in Europe with a factory tow bar but I can tell you it copes with a large trailer with two bikes, fuel cans, wheels etc happily. It also copes with that same trailer with well over a ton and a half of rubble on it (yes, they did put me on the weighbridge at the dump and wagged their fingers at me)...

Touch wood I've had nothing major go wrong in 45,000 miles and 3 1/2 years, though there are a couple of niggles to get sorted - mainly around the idrive which will be replaced under warranty - and running costs are very reasonable for a big powerful car. It does...OK on fuel. Tyres last about 20,000 miles and I put winters on for the, um, winter. It needs them. Still on the same brake pads, which is a surprise.

Warranty is certainly worth it if you don't know the history of the car. And probably is if you do, to be honest. Just read the small print to see what they don't cover.

Do hold out for an LCI car - post 2014 - because the satnav and idrive are better. If you can get the LED lights they are astounding and worth every penny. Split/fold rear seat is great for practicality and doesn't ruin comfort.

Whatever you do, you'll love it. It is a truly fantastic car.

PPS I'm staggered that running a Guilia QV you can possibly worry about maintenance costs on a BMW :) (I've had five...)

Yes I have started to sound out some independents in the area, there seem to be a few options available so really it would be down to a bit of research on reputation from here. So that’s a relatively decent positive.

Ah so to say the tow bar option is rare would be an understatement😫 the next question there would be did you look into third party tow bars at any point? It would be very useful to have one on this car.
We had 5 series as a kid 530 E34 / 540 E39 and they seemed great tow cars. my uncle had an E39 M5 alongside our 540 which lead to some great memories following the Rally GB around the welsh B roads!

Glad to see you’ve had a good run with your car, I’m beginning to get the picture from various threads it’s not as much of a boogie man the E60 seems to be. I have to agree warranty wise, do you know if there’s a general go to company for this of do most members randomly fish around?

As for the Alfa, it’s the Giulietta QV hatch my wife uses. It’s a weird one, absolutely full of floors. I could write a book on these quite comfortably. Handling and component reliability point to buying any other car. The electrical wires break due to fatigue due to the movement of the rear hatch opening and closing! Priceless. However for me it looks great with an individuality the others don’t seem to have. I have to say, of the many problems they are all touch wood cheap fixes so far!!

Sorry to hijack, but I am also in the process of moving to the F10 M5 albeit from the V10 M6, I am getting a tuned car - apparently tune/down pipes/filters/kats.


What are peoples thoughts on the tuned section of F10 M5's, will it just be a headache and I should revert to a normal OEM asap, Before the thing explodes…?


Car in question is a 2013, Monte Carlo Blue. 50,000miles. Getting a 2yr Warranty. Costs a Little extra, but hey ho.

With a tune like this does it matter if I put the cats back on again? If so will it theow up any Engine Check lights or Codes….?

i'd recommend buying an approved bmw car, you get the warranty then when warranty comes renewal time just pay monthly, its highly worth it, my cars a 2014 with 40k and a new engine by bmw from the previous owners insurance (he drove through a ford (water) at speed and flooded the engine) 2yr warranty on the engine.

I'm due to get a new rear screen next week as my DAB etc stops working when i switch on the heated element, set your self a budget and try stick to it, easier said than done i set one and blew it by 6k lol but it was the right car with the right spec.

Ideally an LCI (late 2013+) model most things are ironed out from the early models.

Yes I bought an Alpine White 2014 CP, with a warranty and 2yrs service..... with a factory tow, and Black 343 wheels from factory.
