Hello M5Board! I just made the best (worst!?!?!) decision ever. I went to look at a 2001 M5 that was advertised on CL on the 1st of the year.
I drove it and it ran really well however needed so much work that I thanked the owner and said that I would pass on it.
He said if he could take the huge speaker box and amp out of the trunk he would sell it for $7,000. I tried to walk away but my legs wouldn’t let me.
The car is beat.
180,000 hard miles
Front seats are trashed
suspension feels like a Tijuana taxi
Broken drivers mirror
cars smells like cotton candy vape and air fresheners
crusty vinyl wrap on the roof
brake pedal is soft until it is pumped
hood cable broken
bad carbon fiber kidneys fell out
Tires are gone
headlights need refinishing, random LEDs, I am suspect about the the ballasts being legit, front plate mounted funny,
has the p0412 and P0441 (carbon build up and fuel breather valve) - hopefully a shark tune will clear this up
many other little things that need fixing. It is going to be a big project!

Some positives!
It is fast, surprisingly
Nice square set MVR Wheelset
short shifter with zhp knob
Neat Brushed interior trim - not vinyl
Fairly nice interior, fold down rear seats
carbon vis hood - would prefer not to have this but it will work for now
interesting front carbon splitter
Body is in pretty good shape
has some suspension modifications - haven’t checked what brand yet
A/C works
basically all electrical works
Has 1/2 of a muffler delete - there is one one each side. Never seen this

The plan for the car -
I would like to drive it and tack it - it is too far gone to try and make it original
Make it safe
replace all fluids
fix the codes / get smogged
rebuild all of the suspension
new tires
New seats - possible Cobra, Sparco or Recaro
Tinker on all the little details
Wish me luck!

1/2 of a muffler delete! But the car is so loud

extras! a vape pen, that new car air freshener, horrible front plate mount, strange carbon kidneys, and thankfully the correct oil!
Oh yeah, is this a vanity plate that says sexy973???? haha

Wait...half a muffler delete?! Who...who does that?

Oh you found a vape pen...OK it all makes sense now. :)

Getting it safe enough for track duty is definitely the best thing you can do as that Beast needs a tremendous amount of work. But for $7k it's hard to pass up.

Looking forward to your updates!

Man dude, I bet you'd be blown away at what Leatherique would do to those seats, especially if you coupled their black leather dye with it! It would do them WONDERS even just alone without dye.

Oh wait, my bad, I didn't see the stitching torn like that when I first looked, just thought it was all dry cracking, but not torn stitching.. dang. New seats and grille in order asap!

Ah, no wonder it is SO loud.
The resonator has been removed. I am running on two mufflers, so odd.
What do you guys think is a good fix? Add good rear mufflers only? Buy a Resonator and do full muffler delete?
Thanks

Add the resonator and do a full muffler delete. Loud enough to be enjoyable while eliminating drone.

Props on picking that up. I don't think it looks to bad from the photos. Shame on the seats cause the hold up incredibly well. If you like projects this one can be fun. Enjoy.

Removed this sound deadening material - complement a carbon fiber hood with a heavy trunk :|

Congrats. I’m going through nearly the same process with a high mileage car. Fixing something usually leads to fixing something else “while you are there”. If you’re handy then this car is for you. If you’re not then the repair/maintenance by someone else will kill you.

If the resonator removal is done nicely, just get good mufflers. I'd look at the Supersprint Magnum mufflers. Way easier than having resonators and new mufflers or axle back pipe installed. Won't be cheaper, though.

Congrats car on finding a good new owner.

Seriously though I am glad you were able to get a very good price on it.

I paid $13k for a 110000 mile car and $10k in parts later the car is like new. I do all the work on my cars.

The previous owner of mine must have given up on maintenance which is exactly what I am looking for in cars I buy.

Congrats again it looks great!

Thanks guys, good group of car fanatics on here.
I've been tackling little stuff and it already is feeling like mine. I just don't know how to get rid of the air freshener vape smell, so gross.

Changing the cabin filters would help. With my experience they have a great smell from the factory. Maybe some of that is lost on the seats being in rough shape. Hate seeing interiors get jacked up like that. I have done two coats of gold class on my car and it's looking great. Maybe have someone sew it and see if you can leatherique.

Ahh I know who you bought this from lol...

This was going to be the leather seat repair attempt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI04exWUkKI
tbh, the seats could be worse. That quick fix might make it good enough to ignore for a long time.
