I have a US model 1995 M540i/6 (or M-Sport) with the European M5 EDC suspension and servtronic steering. I have developed a leak in the power steering pump. Are the "M"-car PS pumps different that a regular e34?. There are two part numbers shown in the ETK for a US model - 32411141573 for a "Hydro steering Tandem Vane Pump" (Vickers) & 32411141569 for a "Vane Pump". P/N for the Euro model is 32412226399 (ZF). The pump on my car is says it is mfg by LUK, but I cannot see a part number.

Dealer list is close to $680 USD. Questions:

1) Has anyone had a successful experience rebuilding these pumps?

2) Does this pump power the EDC or SLS suspension?

3) Is the pump associated with the Servtronic steering a unique P/N?

4) Anyone know the term "Tandem Vane" or it's application.

5) Is there another US model BMW that uses the same pump? If so, I could look to a salvage yard for a possible replacement. (Not much chance of finding a salvage 540 m-sport, with only 200 imported).

Thanks to all. (Sorry that got long)

Re: power steering pump??

If your car has servotronic, which I think it does, you have to find a pump from not just another (93-95) M5, but one that also had servotronic. In 93-94, M5's with N'ring option and in 95 M5's specifically with Servotronic option and M540s should have pumps that are compatible.

The odds are not that bad as there were atleast 1986 93-95 M5's (all euro, some with Servotronic) + M540Sports built (US).

Actually I just looked it up on the parts database and the M5's with servotronic takes a completely different part than the M540i.:crying: Probably has to do with the fact that the steering on the 6's is different than the 8's, as the 8 is much wider. Here are the links to pictures.

It looks like you may be stuck paying the dealer for that super rare item, and I thought parts for the 95 M5 were hard to get. Have you called someone like PacificBMW, their prices are usually only 60% of what our local stealer wants.

Good luck,

Greg

Re: power steering pump??

Have you tried BMA? They almost always can get the part you want for considerably less. 1-888-BMA-3911 I'm sure they will provide the lowest price but shop around just in case.
