It was the standard knob through December 2000 on any M5 with the Titan Line interior trim. Because it had very poor wear resistance, BMW discontinued the part at that time and began offering the all-leather knob in its place. It is no longer available.

Earlier cars with the defective knobs could get them replaced under warranty, so many cars that originally did come with them will have the all leather replacement knob.

Thanks to both of you for the information. Mine is an 03' so I guess mine came with the leather knob. The aluminum one definitely looks better though! Any idea if they discontinued them or if they're still available for purchase through BMW's parts?

I have searched through tons of websites and can't locate the knob! I guess poor durability should be a concern though.

Why bother it looks awful (IMHO). Furthermore it gets hotter than h--l in sunshine and colder than Siberia in the winter. If you want a metal one you can buy a Whalen even though it doesn't look like the original.

I had that knob on my '99 and it got replaced quite a few times because of unusual wear! My advice is don't even bother with it.
