Piston Recommendation Needed

984 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Eryk_PL
It looks like I need new pistons. The block is getting bored over this week. The shop doing the work is having trouble finding oversized OEM pistons. Plus they're $2000 for a set. I've read posts about different pistons being available. Could someone post what kinds are available and where to get them.

Greg,

JE and Wiseco are the standard forged pistons people order. I paid, if I recall, about $1500 for a set of one-over oem Mahle pistons. Not sure where you get the JE and Wiseco. The machine shop should be able to order them for you.

Kevin,
Was there a reason you picked the Mahle over the Wiseco or JE? And a friend of mine is going to a soccer tournament in LA this weekend also. His daughter plays on a Premier team. Are you going to the same tournament?

The Mahle's are the BMW oem pistons. Mine were ordered through BMW. You may want to check Pacific BMW's prices assuming the bore would be right.

I am going to an 0-35 tournament which is essentially, getting sore, pulling muscles and drinking a lot afterwards. I actually coached CYSA traveling teams for about ten years. Kind of miss it but my wife doesn't.

I'm not sure which dealership Avus uses but there are only four more one over M5 pistons in the country. They're checking in Germany for two more.

It would seem there are three alternative suppliers of pistons for the M5 - JE, Ross and Wiseco, all US based. From what I gathered from their websites, the prices are considerably lower than BMW OEM, actually as much as 4 times lower!

Regards
