I was wondering how many people are having their oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles? Or are people waiting for the next service as per the service indicator lights?

I used to change the oil and filter on my E34 525i every 3k. Now that my E39 M5 has about 3k since the 1200 mile service, I'm considering keeping to my old routine. Any thoughts?

I used to change my oil every 3K too. But with modern oils - and especially with synthetics, it is just a waste of money. Oil Filters remove particulate contaminants and synthetics don't break down under normal conditions for a long, long time.

Oils, as well as metals used in modern engines, are so much better than they used to be. Save yourself the dirty fingernails and the $18 a quart - let BMW pay for the regular oil changes and enjoy driving.

(P.S. - If you autocross, track-race, or otherwise beat your car - then I would reconsider.)
