Hate not having a dipstick. I am at .8 oil level now. Need to top off just a bit. Half a quart maybe? Just afraid of overfill. Also, what level would be the lowest you would go on the gauge.....5? Without adding? Searched but got just oil viscosity threads and not may about doing a self top off. Thanks all.

I know how to reset the gauge but just want a round about feedback from users when they top off. Even the BMW dealer said it is a pain the the butt to not overfill it.:grrrr:

Has the car told you to add +1 ltr?

Do you see a warning triangle on the display that says low oil?

If not, leave it alone and wait until the car tells you to do so. If you're that eager to add oil, go out and drive your car hard to burn off some oil.

Don't add until the computer tells you to add!!! When I add, I only add .5 L after the computer ask me to add 1 L. I never worry about overfilling. It's impossible to overfill, the way I do it.

.8 is fine.

The oil level/quality sensor will not register a change less than 0.5 when adding. This is in the DME programming to ignore it.

As recommended above, I wouldn't add until near 0 and it tells me too. Just always keep a quart handy...why do you think they sell those neat little TWS Quart Coozies? ;)

Thanks for the real world driving info. I do not trust the manual. Reason I posted the thread. Also, I am a guy that relies on a dipstick. Also, I have seen the oil sensor level monitor can fail or be faulty, reason for me asking the question. Again, thanks for the great info.

IMHO, I would not worry about your oil level at 0.8. It's better to leave it than to try and fill and overfill. As stated above, let the oil level to go down to at least below 0.5 before you fill it. It's a shame we don't have a dipstick tho...

8-1/2 years, 51,000 miles, and not a single problem adding one liter (no more, no less) when the car tells me I should add a liter. It's as simple and as reliable as that. Don't "top off," don't reset the oil measurement, don't overthink.

Hey! Yes, have been too busy racing. Still have the M5 and can't seem to part with it. Hope you're well.
