If anyone is offended by this by all means flame, or have me killed or somthing. I was wondering about the ages of some of the posters/Owners on the E39 page. It would be upsetting if any of you were my age.(Hint. I can die for my country but I can't drink here).

What about the '00 E55 and 500E and the C43 that you mentioned (in the E55 vs M5) you sent back to Taiwan? Don't you include those cars as currently owned vehicles?

Interesting topic.

'83 T-Bird (got it in '87 used, and traded it in on:

'89 Chevy S10 Blazer sport. bought new.

'92 Camry (bought new. ex-wife still has it)

'96 Chrysler T&C LX (minivan) (bought used in '97. traded in the blazer)

'99 GMC Sierra SLE 4WD extended cab Pickup (still have the truck and love it. Bought new in June '99. traded in the van.)

'00 BMW M5 Avus Blue / Black all leather (paid cash. Gotta love this country!!)

If some young guy made some cash on the market and wants to buy an M5, nothing wrong wrong with that.

If his mom and dad bought it for him--well, I think there is a lot wrong with that but I have learned that many people think it is ok to buy your child a $70k car because they, for example, actually graduated from college. Such an accomplishment. To think the rest of us did because we wanted a decent job. Man, just think what my grades would have been like if there was an M5 as a reward.

I got into this discussion with some very young E39 540i owner at bimmer.org and essentially he told me his parents didn't want him to work at McDonalds while he was at school so they supported him. I guess the $15k used Acura Legend wouldn't suffice for a college kid so they bought him a $60k car. I think it is pretty basic really. The parents are so concerned about what other people think of them that they feel the car their child drives reflects on them. Am I totally off-base here?

KKelly,

I think that such rewards are ludicrous. How can someone respect a car if they weren't the ones who worked their asses off for it in the first place. These ideas that you should spoil your kids with such extreme luxuries is absolutley obsured. O.K. maybe a nice new car, but to spend some 60K+ is outrageous.

It is all relative. $60K may be a lot to most of us, but for some people it is a drop in the bucket for a few. More power too them.

KKelly,

I agree that there's nothing wrong at being twenty-something and owning an M5. I'm 25 myself. I am just wondering why this issue of age in relation of M5 ownership was ever brought up. Obviously these guys think that they have an edge over other owners.

Earl,

Well, I shipped those cars back to Taiwan, drive for couple months, then sell them. Use the '00 E55 for example.

Brand E55 in Canada = $98,000 CDN
The same car with same option will cost around $280,000 CDN in Taiwans, and even I drove the car a bit(make it a used will deduct import tax when ship back to Taiwan), and minus shipping cost, all kinda tax, and I can still make at least 200% profit on it....

Also, I don't consider OWN the car if it's, 1st, purely business, or 2nd, I don't have the access to the car whenever I want to....

Kelvin,

Why you think that brought up this question is insulting?? True it will bring alot of comments, but it maybe pure curiousity as well. And you think every young guy behind BMW or 3 point-star is rich, spoiled kid??? Then you are wrong. Oh heck, I bought my 1992 400SE brand new back in 1992, consider the currency rate back then, I actually paid more then what you paid for E39 M5. And though by that time, my Dad paid it in full amount, I already paid him back 2 years ago(that makes me 18 then)....

What's with you?? Sorry if my words offend you....but that's how I feel as an Asian....

Racism sucks....I feel ashame of being an Asian now...thnx to you.....

sorry arky,

I don't have the time and energy to respond to your childish posts. I'll be ignoring your posts from now on. BTW, it's not about racism, it's about your set of "look at me" attitudes that i don't like. It doesn't have to do with you being asian, white or black.

So what's your point about paying more for a 1992 benz? Why do you keep comparing?

- Age comparison
- Car comparison
- Price comparison

what are you trying to show?

Getting back to the original inquiry, I quess I must be the only old codger checking out this web site. I came across this site shortly after putting a deposit on an M5 in Jan. '99. It has been interesting to read the comments on what I believe is a most remarkable car.
I started driving in the late 60's muscle car era (I'm 50) and always wanted a fast car. While working my way thru college I bought a '64 Pontiac Grand Prix with a 421 HO 4-speed and a .411 rear-end. Unfortunately, one week before I was married at age 20, the car was totalled when hit broadside by a bus. It wasn't until 1986 that I could afford another fast car and bought a Porsche 928. I subsequently got a '93 Typhoon (a 285 hp turbo charged SUV 0-60 in <5.5sec if your unfamiliar) and later a '95 Porsche 911 cabriolet, and a restored '65 Corvette.
My need for speed has not waned and so when I needed a new family car I just couldn't settle for a slow vehicle. Fortunately, my longsuffering wife allowed me yet again to get the car I wanted. The M5 is the ultimate, combining the comfort and smoothness of a luxury car with the speed and handling of the best sports cars. Sorry for my senile rambling but I enjoy extolling the virtues of the M5.

lear,

even though you didn't start this post, you shouldn't have participated.

arky,

you should find a fix to your self esteem problem. May I recommend you a psychotherapist?
As opposed to me? Hey **** you, I saved for two and a half years to get my first car, I walked or got rides, or borrowed my mom's hyundai, while my friends parents were buying them cars. I am currently working 40+hours a week and going to school full time to afford my 12 year old car. I guess I'd be an ignorant prick if I was from NY too.***.

Sorry for the outburst, and the language. I also find this interesting. However the original point of my question was, despite the increasing number of millionaire day-traders out there, how many 20 yr olds can really afford a $80k car, sans help from family or mysterious benefactor? Also how many teens really need to be given such a car? This brings to mind I a girl I knew in HS. In 4 yrs she went through, if I remember correctly, 2 3000gtvr-4's, a camaro and a stealth, all brand new. When she wrecked the stealth she was more upset about a cd that was broken than the car.

hugs and kisses

JonGhast, are you surprised that a girl would be more concerned about a cd than the car itself? Bet you it was a Bruce Springstein cd as well.

I'm also from NY, so does that mean I am also a prick? I guess all New Yorkers are pricks? Hmmmm...let me think that one over...

Hey TWC, the Pontiac Grand Prix 421 HO was a good car, but do you think you coulda taken my '68 Hemi RoadRunner back then? heh-heh-heh.....
