I came across a 2000 M5 (Lemans or Avus Blue with Lemans interior) that a slavage place is selling for $24,500. It is pretty painful to see. But for those of you who can't resist. Here is the web address. Once at the site, you should search for all cars. It is alphabetical order so it should be near the top.

I am on the waiting list for a 2002 M5. I want a Lemans Blue one just like the wrecked one. However, even if the damage could be repaired for a total expenditure less than $70k+....it still would never drive like a new one. It looks to have some seriously bad structural issues. Although.... you are right...it is tempting as a project car and I wouldn't have to wait the 13 months. I wonder how much the engine and transmission alone are worth? I think it might be worth it on the drivetrain alone.

Why are you having to wait for a 2002? There are plenty of ways to get a car at MSRP in under 4 months. Even in Southern California we do not wait this long.

TOM C, I saw a silverstone M5 at westchester BMW about 2 weeks ago. If your interested it should still be there, and make sure you haggle their 78k pricetag. If not, I am sure you could get one sooner. I have a lemans blue also, i got mine in about 3 months. If you have any questions post back your email, I would be happy to keep an eye out.

Ouch. One thing concerns me though. The driver's airbag didn't deploy. Given the obvious severity of this collision, which was at least partially frontal from what I can see, would you expect that the airbag would have deployed?

Also - I gotta believe the price is at least fair - if the engine and drivetrain are in good shape - and they probably are - not to mention wheels, interior goodies - a lot of good parts there. Hmmm. How about a Roadster project?

fas/MAH:

I am on a waiting list at Competition & Sports Cars in Greenwich, CT. The car is at MSRP, although I am contemplating doing European delivery. The dealer told me that the car would not be delivered until November 2001 as a 2002 model. When I placed the deposit I selected Jet Black as my color choice with the Siverstone interior. However, I have decided to go with the Lemans blue exterior and interior instead.

I really don't mind the wait. I am 28 years old and am working my *** off to save money for both the M5 and a house. I figure to have the house by next spring. I also hope my patience will pay off with (maybe) a modest increase in horsepower for the 2002 edition.

BTW I saw that silverstone M5 at Westchester BMW over a month ago. The dealer told me that it was $89k. I guess the month + of sitting there in front has them sobering up. The dealer told me a funny story in connection with that car. He told me someone ordered it looking at the color chart in a brochure. When the would-be owner came to pick it up....he couldn't believe he bought a "powder blue" car. So the dealership bought it back from him at a premium.

fas, how do you like the Lemans blue? I love that color. I have seen two of them on the road. It is really a stunning color. Which interior color did you get?

I think it would be a great drivetrain to snatch up, modify and then replace the OEM units in a Z8 or an M5. This way when you want to put the car back to stock...the original unit would not be abused and the build numbers would obviously match. This is especially appealing to a Z8 owner whose car is worth (well...not in my opinion) upwards of $300k.
