Just a quick post to say 'hello'! I have just joined the forum, having bought a 2001 Le Mans blue car a few weeks ago. I had been looking for an M5 for some months and finally found this one which was a bit pricier than the rest but the condition was really good and mileage low. There are a few little things it needs doing to make it really mint, but it is very close already and a very nice drive. I'm going to keep it pretty much standard I think, although the wealth of information on this site may tempt me otherwise! I will try to make further updates as and when I make any improvements.

First off... Congrats on the ///M!!

Taking your time and finding the ///M for you goes a long way, I'm glad that you found one you were comfortable with. I don't have an LMB, mine's a TiAg, but I find LMB to be a *beautiful* colour!

Welcome to the board and spend some time here getting to know your ///M. There is a wealth of information and knowledge to take advantage of here!

Congrats and welcome! Good luck keeping her stock! You will have to totally stay off this forum to have even a remote shot at that coming true!

Congrats from one LMB to another!! Welcome to the club.

good luck staying totally stock, I can pretty much guarantee that will not happen! LOL. Something will need to be fixed/replaced or need preventive maintenance and then you'll be telling yourself "why just replace the stock shocks and springs with new OEM parts? they cost so much already I may as well pay a little more for Dinan...". Ask me how I know :tonquesmilie:

cheers,

Sean Paul

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. The wheels have been recently refurbished so there are no kerbing marks at all, but the M stickers were missing (came off for the repaint no doubt) and the centre caps are probably the originals and have seen better days, so I'll be replacing those to get the wheels looking like new. There were no mats in the car when I bought it - the carpets looked good so I presume there used to be mats in there but maybe they were looking worn so thrown out prior to sale, so I'll be getting some new mats for it to keep the interior protected and make it easier to clean out muck from when the kids get to go in it! The rubber seal around the driver's door was perished so I have ordered a new one of those to go on as well. There are a couple of tools missing but I also have a 540i Touring so will just take them from that so the M5 has its full complement present! And I bought a touch up pot to paint in a tiny mark on one of the mirrors which must have been brushed into something. I have also bought some wax so once I have given it a good clean this will be going on, along with leather treatment so I know my starting point in terms of its 'cleaning schedule'. That's it for the immediate jobs on it I think. Oh, apart from the tow bar which I need to source and fit in order that I can tow my trailer with the car occasionally.

As for the mods, I was toying with the idea of a MkIV Sat nav upgrade, but I haven't got to terms with the current sat nav to tell whether it is worth bothering with, and I'm not sure how often I would use the car to go somewhere unknown and persevere with it. The muffler delete thread is another one that is tempting me as my father has a wonderful-sounding TVR that I love hearing and so I would quite like to release a bit more of the S62’s song!

Congrats on the purchase of your M5!

I just purchased a 2001 M5 myself 2 days ago, its carbon black with black & grey leather and has covered 142k miles although it looks and drives as if has done half that. That could be due to the fact that the first owner was a lady who covered 120k miles herself!

I will try and post some pics real soon once I figure out how to, will search the threads.

Enjoy the motor.

Lovely car, and in the best colour.

As for the towbar, I've heard it can be done, but I dont know how easy it will be. I had a detachable Westfalia towbar fitted to my 530d (I think they do the OEM ones), but I seem to recall that fitted all sport models but not the M5. Exhaust is obviously the issue

Congrats and welcome! I've had my beast for 7 months and have kept her stock. But, I've also been considering the MKIV upgrade and the straight pipes. I will likely pass on the MKIV.At least $400 for a unit and, from what I hear, a Garmin or TomTom at 50% less price-wise performs better. As for the straight pipes, I may succumb to that temptation. Lots of threads on this mod and some use clip-ons in case they want to go back to stock (that's what I'll probably do). Also, I have the Intravee II and the KCA-420i. Not really a "mod" but you'll have lots of fun with the Intravee II functionality as compared to your OEM CD changer--Ipod, satellite radio and lots of other cool functions.

Wow, gorgeous. Best color along with TiSilver which I think flatters the cars lines, keeps it clean and somehow keeps it looking less dated. Couldn't find any LMB w/low miles when I was buying last spring. Anyway, how many miles does your car have?

About modding. Since you're a 2001, you've already got the updates (front/back lights + wide screen) that are the most common mods people do their pre-2001 cars. If I were in your position, the only thing I would modify is the exhaust for a more robust sound. Otherwise, besides factory options, I feel the car is so perfect + fast already I hate to tinker, especially since you need to spend a **** load of money to really make the car perform much faster. Besides, a more aggressive suspension, you can't gain any real speed unless you're spending $10k+. Finally, with my car experiencing zero maintenance issues so far, I'm always superstitious that the new parts will contribute to gremlins.

It has just ticked over 61,000 miles, which is low for UK standards as most have done double that. I know they say buy on condition rather than mileage but I looked at quite a few and this was definitely the best one I saw. It just happened that it was also the lowest mileage one I looked at! There was obviously then a premium to be paid for a lovely condition car AND a low mileage, but I figured it was worth it and I don't plan on selling it and I know I'll be able to maintain its current condition for many years to come!

I started off very open to most colour schemes. The wood interior was something I fancied a change from as my 540i already has that. Towards the end of my search I had decided that LMB with blue/black interior and sport (metal) trim would be my ideal combo, but figured I'd end up buying the first car that met my condition criteria rather than colour combo. In the end it happened to be the exact spec I had at the top of my list - hey, I'd have liked to have had the alcantara roof lining, but I read on here that you can't have that with the rear blind, and my car does have that so I try and console myself that I do have something else in its place! We have not had much sun recently but having seen it under bright lights in the garage it does look like a colour that comes 'alive'. A psychologist would probably have something to say about the colour choice as subliminally I do seem to be drawn to blue I guess - I have other blue cars too!

LMB is a gorgeous colour. Mine is the same. There was a post on here recently I think suggesting that they'd disappeared Stateside :dunno:
