After a long but absolutely worth it wait, I purchased the Beast a few months ago in August but haven’t had time to create a thread sharing the story behind my purchase. My Beast is a 2008 LCI 6MT, loaded with all options except Soft Close Doors, in Silverstone Metallic II and Black Merino Interior. The odometer read only a little over 15,000 miles upon purchase but was given a Brand New Engine, Brand New Transmission, and Brand New Clutch/Flywheel. The story behind my purchase of the Beast is long, but I will try to condense it as much as I can.
After searching for months upon months since I am extremely picky with color combinations, options, mileage, 6 speed manual, condition, warranty, history, etc, I finally found the M5 with everything I wanted and more at a BMW Dealership about 3 hours away from my house. After speaking with my Sales Person at least 20 times in one day to discuss everything, ask all my questions, and coming to the agreement that the car would be CPO’d prior to purchase, I was definitely sold and immediately gave a deposit and said I would be there for pickup that weekend.
The following day, I received a call from my Sales Person, Service Adviser, and the Shop Manager to inform me that upon inspection a chatter-like noise was discovered which sounded like the Clutch and Flywheel were going bad. I was surprised since the car only had 15,000 miles; however, it is still under original warranty and new parts are always good so I was fine with it. I received a call the following day providing me with an update that the chatter-like noise did not go away with the new Clutch and Flywheel replacement. At that point, I was starting to get worried but they assured me they would diagnose the issue until they discovered the root of the problem. After hours of attempted diagnosing, I received a call from the dealership informing me they were unsuccessful and opened a PUMA Case with BMW – I was then getting even more worried but decided to give it a chance. A few days later, I received a call from my Sales Person and Service Adviser informing me that after working with the Engineer, they had come to the conclusion to install a Brand New Transmission, already placed the order from Germany, and the Transmission should be there in about 10 days. I was very excited to hear that I would be getting a Brand New Transmission considering the price of one and just the peace of mind of knowing I would have a Brand New Transmission, Clutch, and Flywheel. Definitely worth the wait so I told them to go ahead and do what they have to do.
After 11 days of waiting anxiously, I finally received a call informing me the new Transmission had arrived and would be installed by that afternoon. As promised I received a call that the Transmission was installed successfully but did not solve the issue and the chatter-like noise remained. At that point, I was frustrated and ready to ask for my money back because I just couldn't understand why they were having such trouble resolving the problem and I was getting worried that the car might be a Lemon. However, they apologized and asked repeatedly that I give them a little more time because there was only one thing left to thoroughly diagnose, the Engine. I asked them why they did not diagnose the Engine to begin with? My Service Adviser and Shop Manager said they were just following procedures and the steps/instructions they were required to follow based upon the location the chatter-like noise was emanating from. I figured I've waited that long already so what’s another couple days and told them again to do what they have to do.
After a few days of waiting anxiously once again, I received a call from the dealership with my Sales Person, Service Adviser, Shop Manager, and 2 Engineers all on the phone to inform me there was bad news, but really good news. I asked for the bad news first and was told they found fine metal shavings upon draining the oil indicating a bent rod, damaged bearing, or other problem. I of course say, “Holy **** that’s not good there’s only 15,000 miles on the car! How? What now?” I then asked for the really good news and was told that BMW does not re-manufacture or rebuild Engines so they would be removing the damaged Engine from the car the following day, but have already placed the order for a Brand New Engine from Germany, and should be there in about 10 days! At that point, I was absolutely relieved and ecstatic about getting a Brand New Engine! Once again, after a long wait that felt like months, I received the call to inform me the Engine had arrived and installation would begin immediately and to expect a call sometime the following evening after they perform all the required procedures and tests upon installing a new Engine.
I finally received a call the following evening to inform me that the issue was resolved, noise was gone, the car was running great, and after a couple more required tests the car would be ready for pickup by the weekend. My Sales Person, Service Adviser, Shop Manager, and the Engineers all emphasized what had happened was a very rare occurrence and that I could not get a better deal than I was getting because even though the M5 only had 15,000 miles, I was basically getting a Brand New M5 without the $100,000 price. They also emphasized that a Brand New Engine alone is about $25,000-$30,000. After the long wait that felt like a year, I was just absolutely ecstatic that on top of everything else that already made me want that exact car to begin with, I was getting a Brand New Engine, Brand New Transmission, and Brand New Clutch/Flywheel. After I picked up the Beast, it was then onto the Break-In Procedure of 1,200 miles then 3,400 miles which felt like forever since I do not daily drive the car and just killed me not to press the M Button and hear her scream. LoL. I finally completed Break-In a little over one month ago, brought the M5 to the dealership for the required oil change, pressed the M Button upon exit, and completely fell in love and continue to fall in love all over again every time I drive the car.
NEW MODS INSTALLED SINCE I PURCHASED THE BEAST:
So far I have purchased the Full RPI GT Exhaust Sections 1, 2, and 3 (Simply Amazing), H&R Lowering Springs, 12mm H&R Wheel Spacers all around, 30% Window Tint all around, Black Kidney Grilles, Black Trunk M5 Badge, Aluminum ///M Pedals, Custom Painted Calipers with ///M Logos & Wheel Hubs, and just ordered new Multi-Piece 20” Wheels (More info and pictures to come).
Prior to this, I had a fully modified E92 335i Coupe which was a fantastic car. I am definitely very happy and completely satisfied with my decision to go with the M5. It is an absolute thrill to drive every time and the sound of the V10 especially after installing the Full RPI GT Exhaust is simply intoxicating and addicting! LoL. I've been here on the forum for a while now, even before I purchased the car and I can definitely say I am happy to be a part of the M5 Community where everyone from what I have seen gets along very well and is very helpful to each other. I look forward to meeting everyone in the upcoming season at all the events, meets, and shows. Thanks everyone! :M5launch:
