Hello everyone. <?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

I wish to start a new thread in regards to the E39 m5 firstly I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Steven. And I’m new to the BMW Arena. I have 2 Bmw's 1 E46 330D M-sport, and an E39 M5 the latter being a 1999 build. And I have got a number of problems with it at the moment. I guess I should start with the biggest one and then describe the latters at a later date.

Firstly before I continue I guess I should also advise you all as to my where about's (I live in a town Called Barrow-in-Furness) some people have heard of it and I'm in no doubt that others haven't.

For those that have not all I can say is it’s near the Lake District. And here is one of my many problems when it comes to this area. I’m not aware (yet) anywhere that is close to where I live where I can get some help with my car(s)

So I suppose you will all be wondering what my issue is. Well here goes

My M5 has what can only be described as a rattle/clunk coming from it (I believe, but could be wrong) that this is the classic Vanos issue with this car I’m slightly worried that it could be worse. But I’m hoping it really isn't. I have to be brutally honest I know very little about this car and have no idea. What I’ve got myself into. That said I’m willing, and able to learn (from the experts in this forum) so please can you bear with me.

I don't want to get rid of that car as it is a wonderful car to drive and the V8 is something I’ve wanted to own for a number of year(s) having owned a XR4x4 with a Cosworth V6 lump from the Granada I thought this next vehicle would be the next logical step (I know I’m out of my depth here in regards to BMW) so I thought maybe I could get some help/advice or pointers as to where I should go

So sorry for the lengthy thread (it was not intended) but I hope you technical people can offer help to a newbie in this arena

Many many thanks

Steven

Welcome to the board.

Can you post a video or at lest a sound clip of the rattle? This will be helpful for others. Does the rattle go away shortly after start up or is it constant. Does the rattle's intensity or frequency change with engine speed, vehicle speed or is it constant?

There is absolutely no way anyone can guess what "rattle/clunk" you are referring to. Take your phone or a camera and film the rattle, move about the engine, below and above, each side, so we can hear the clunk/rattle and get an approximate idea where it is coming from. Only by doing so will you get any help.

Rattle/clunk could be 'rod knock' which means your engine is about to blow if you push it any harder... or it could be nothing crazy / serious. So for the sake of your engine, post a video.
