Hey everybody, I have a problem with the in car phone in my E39. So I got the old style phone(shown below)from an e38 in a junkyard and wanted to make the phone light up, so I bought a module(shown below) which was also in an e38. I looked at another facelift E39 in the junkyard and found that it had the same adapter that fits the e38 module. But when I tried to fit the module onto my car(2003 530i), it had a different head(shown below) not allowing me to connect it to the e38 module. Is there any sort of adapter to make the e38 module fit? Would really appreciate any help on this.

Hi,

You'll need to look at your E39 and determine exactly which OEM audio setup it has by checking part numbers and revision numbers. Then look in the ETK and realom catalogues and find the same numbers for the telephone systems for your year/month build date of the car and then purchase the compatible modules/looms/fixings etc, then plug it all in and hope they're still functional etc.

Or, you can have an electronics specialist open up the existing telephone you have, determine where the PCB/IC's are that allow illumination and modify so that there's power to the unit so it only lights up.

Cheers, Dennis!

Thank you Dennis, I’ll see if I can find an electronics specialist in my area

I'm just trying to get power to the phone so it can light up. I don't think you can even make calls on these phones anymore because they're so old that nobody supports the system they use if I'm not mistaken. I once saw a video of a guy in Australia who was able to make calls with it but he said soon after that video, they took down the last system that supports calls on those phones.

hey i'm wondering is this the same plug? I was doing a subwoofer install in my 2000 bmw e39, and I found this big impressive plug. Is this for the telephone module? Anybody have any better pictures of this module and or the part number? I guess that explains why my steering wheel has the voice icon and i have the cutout for the speaker?

Hey! Yes the one with the red cover looks like the one that would pair up with the telephone module I have that doesn't work for my car. I think after 2001, they changed the connectors and modules which is why the telephone module I got off a 2000 7 series, which will fit for your car, didn't fit for my 2003 530i. If you want I can give you the preface lift module I have laying around if you're interested.

yeah, is it possible to send more pics of the module you have, like from all sides and what connections it has? I was trying to find it online and it was not easy. including a part number?
