Monthly US sales report (E39 M5)

Looks like the last of the 2000 M5's trickled in in September. Only 36 cars were sold. After running at ~ 250 - 300 per month. This is due to the model changeover & plant closing in August.

Therefore the unofficial final number for the Y2k model year is .... drum roll please ... 2,874 units (from October 1999 thru September 2000) very impressive. I'ts probably the best selling $80k car during that period.

It's unlikely that we'll see a repeat in '01.

I heard from a dealer today that BMW is planning to increase MY2001 allocation -- but I guess seeing is believing. Max, any info on future allocations?
I have no info on future allocations. However, I expect the market to soften in year 2. The first year for a car of this caliber is always a blowout. I can't speak for CA, but in the NYC metro area there's only a 2 - 3 month wait. The number of used 2000's that are for sale have skyrocketed. Prices are falling as we speak.

Stay tuned.
Does anyone have an "in" with BMW such that they could get a further breakdown of M5 sales? Volume by color, sport / exclusive, all leather vs. extended?

I am curious to know how many other Avus Blue with black all leather exclusive interior with split folding rear seats (but no PDC) M5s there are (in Massachusetts).

What combination is most popular? What is rarest?
Actually I just came back from Spartanburg for O'fest. According to our guide on the plant tour, the most popular color for any BMW sold in the US is silver by a wide margin. The M5 is no exception. As far as breakdown by color, combos. That data resides deep inside NA's computers. Only a true insider would have access to that information.

Anyway, Ofest was a blast. They actually had an M5 available for test drives. By the time I left on Tuesday night, at least 3 speeding tickets were handed out to test pilots. The local gendarmes clearly knew something was up when all these BMW's from all over the map converged on Spartanburg.

As usual BMW was a great host.

Next year's event will be in Waterville Valley NH. It should be equally impressive.
