Planning for Mexican Grand Prix progresses

The first Mexican Grand Prix since 1992 is scheduled to take place in 2006, with construction work on the new circuit scheduled to begin in February.

Now that the circuit operators and Bernie Ecclestone have signed a deal, architect Hermann Tilke and his team are pressing ahead with the plans for the new circuit near the Mexican resort of Cancun. Although the final decision concerning the track layout has not yet been made, Tilke is convinced that it will be an impressive facility.

“What is certain is that we plan a track which will cross itself,” said Tilke, “With the circuit leading under the oval ring outside and inside again.” So far, the ‘Suzuka International Racing Course’ is the only circuit on the Formula One calendar with a similar feature.

Apart from the Formula One circuit, the Cancun facility will also consist of an oval, thus offering the operators the opportunity to use it for numerous events. However, it is not yet clear if parts of the oval will be also used for the Formula One Grand Prix as is the case at the ‘Indianapolis Motor Speedway’.

The circuit will be located only ten minutes from Cancun’s city centre and is understood to have a capacity for 100,000 spectators.
