I believe it's the same. Take a look at this site (germanfilters.com) 2002 BMW M5 oil filter - 5.0 V8 - German Filters or http://www.germanfilters.com/2000-bmw-oil-filter-p-45914.html
They have a good cross reference to all the filters, and I beileve Mann makes them for any different companies under different names (please correct me if I'm wrong). I picked up a Bosch one at local auto parts store, and to my surprise it was made in Germany (looks exactly like the ones at the dealership).
^Yeah, I didn't realize that. I use their plugs in my car, but I guess I didn't know that. When I saw made in Germany, it was almost suggestive that the filter was made by Mann and stamped Bosch (that's what I thought).
If you go to the dealer you usually get a Henst filter for the E39
Mann are the OEM for most 3 Series
Both are very good and usually from Germany
The Hengst one has the full black plastic top, while Mann use a amber resin, like in their other filters.
Mahle also use a black top on their E39 filter
The 3 main air and oil filter OEM suppliers for BMW are Mahle, Hengst and MANN
The top filter is a Hengst not a Mann. Both are fine... one is not inferior to the other, just a different design. That said always stay away from non-OEM filter manufacturers.
