Does anyone go to the Manheim auctions and can pull records to see what the E39's are selling for? Seems like lately that prices are very high at these auctions where there is very little if any profit for car dealers to buy and resale? I saw a list in the Mercedes forum of E55's prices sometime back and there where basically sold for what they where going for retail. Seems like everyone these days has a dealer license and can get into these which in turn drives the prices up.

Some prices prices not too bad. I wonder what type of condition average is per the auction as there seems to be a few priced well.

I would love to be able to go one on the east coast and see what type of condition they are in.

You will rarely, and I mean extremely rarely see anything go for clean or excellent money regardless of condition.

Alex,

I assume that is because everyone knows (assumes) there is only one reason a car is at auction (for the most part)...the dealer selling it knows he/she can't make a decent profit by fixing what needs to be fixed to sell it? Clearly not all cars are sent to auction for that reason, but isn't that the general gist of it? I would assume bidders do their best to asses the needs of a given car prior to bidding. (I'm just guessing on all of this of course)

Well we'll take out the auction likes of Barrett Jackson and other specialty auctions for this response but in some cases you are correct it ends at auction cuz its pure and simple A DOG! Either its exhausted its floor time at a dealer or the vehicle doesnt fit the profile of the dealers buyers or its more work then they want to do to put on retail lot etc etc etc. There is also another reason it ends up there too...visibility. At an auction your likely to meet another buyer who will identify that car as the perfect fit for their buying profile.

I did have the pleasure of attending an auction at Manheim as a guest of a general sales manager for a toyota dealership. That place is as huge as could be and there were some older cars, these were all visually clean and operationally ready it seemed, but there are also the finance arms of the manufacturers there unloading lease turn ins, program cars and repo's etc. Thats how a lot of the dealers stock their CPO's. I have also heard in FLA there is an auction for "only" highline cars, not sure what falls into that bucket other than the brands everyone is familiar with. There are also some "auctions" that are local to me that I call the "pound" not sure who in their right mind would buy that junk but I guess people do. I would say that when I toured Manheim a few years ago I did not see any "dogs" per se but there were so many cars to see and we only stayed for a specific few cars they were waiting to come up on the block, $250,000 out the door later we were off. I do know Manheim has some standards though as this same fella who bought these cars bought a car there and when they got it back to the shop found the frame was bent and someone sprayed undercoating of some sort to cover it up. They got all their money back.

The climate of these auctions has changed as have the prices recently. A good number of people with deep pockets going after a smaller number of good clean used cars so consequently the prices have ticked up slightly. Basically there are auctions everywhere and depending on which auction the dealer purchased from the term auction isnt really a bad word but I will always ask "how did you get this car"?
