Hi everyone!

Just got new main bearing shells from the stealer for my engine rebuild.

Half of them got a red dot, the other half got a blue dot.

Stealer couldn't tell me which one is up and which one is down.

Anyone?

Cheers
Ray

Found small red dots in the crankcase...red shells go up i presume.

Can anyone confirm we actually need red AND blue ones?

From E30 M20B25 engines I know the conrod bearings are different in color and part number. But for the M5...

Don't think so.

If you look on realoem you see the top and bottom bearings have the same number "3".

My revision company says that the colors are for the (dutch=passing) of the crankshaft. So no torq or forces. But than it is strange they supply 2 colors for the same size.
I asked it to for my 2002tii engine and they didn't know it @ the dealer.

What partnumbers are on the bearings Raymond?

Thanks Tomba...

If you look at realoem you see that #3 is available in red and blue though...

Got confirmation from former BMW mechanic who looked it up at home that i need the red and blue ones.

I'm gonna put the red ones up since there's the red dot in the crankcase and the blue ones down.

Has anyone got an idea why there's two different halves?

Searched in different BMW hand books from the E34 but can't find anything.

Only on TIS I saw this (attached picture).
Seems there are 2 colors for each size. Only with a wider tolerance.

Do you got the partnumbers from the bearings by hand?

Hi Tom

I ordered the main bearing shells 60,00 mm at the dealer without giving them partnumbers...just checked and the numbers on the invoice are the exact same ones as on realoem...

6 x 11211261041
6 x 11211261042
1 x 11211261033
1 x 11211261034

I think you have to get all bearings with one color.
Check the #2 for the axial bearing. For the Blue color 2 pieces are given and for the red 2 pieces. While you need 2 and not 4.

Still is very strange, hope someone comes up wtih the conclusion of this ??????

This is indeed very confusing...and since i've already put the red and blue ones in i'm getting a bit worried here ! ??????

Anyone with the final answer ?

[edit] just saw a rebuild list on the German board and it had 6 red and 6 blue bearing shells on it...feel a bit better now[/edit]

The dots relate to tolerances when rebuilding an engine with original crank. We used to do lots of warranty claims on the M3 and you fitted direct replacement of colour and checked clearance with PLASTIGUAGE. If it was incorrect you then used the next size of colour prior to replacing or regrinding the crank. I hope this helps a little!

I have a set of .50 oversized Mahle mains if you have not ground the mains yet?
