I have head that our M5's use only one of the MAFS to read on. The other one only being there for back up. This really doesn't make sense, but is coming from a mechanic at the local BMW dealership. Do you guys know if this is true? If this holds true then I will only change one of them.
Thanks,
Al

The intake air temp sensor in a stock M5 is only operational in one of the MAFs, but as far as I know, both MAFs supply info to the DME.

Both MAFs are used by the DME. On the S62 engine, there are two independent air intake systems that feed a common plenum, each with separate MAFs, air ducts and air filters. This was done in the interest of increasing inlet air flow capacity. These are functionally the same parts used in the 540i (where one MAF, air filter, etc, are used).

The BMW mechanic (1) may have been thinking about the inlet temp. sensor, (2) was having some fun with you, or (3) is not knowledgeable.
