Greetings,

I have been researching the M6 for a bit, and this site has been very helpful. I am currently driving an 03 SVT Cobra 10th coupe that's modified (Chassis, cooling, drivetrain, more boost, etc.) and puts down 470 rwhp and 470rwtq. I am not looking to compare this to an M6 because they are clearly in different leagues. I am contemplating acquiring an M6 and relegating the Cobra as a "chew toy" for it.

For those of you driving the M6 with the 6-speed manual, I'd like to get your overall drivability impressions. Here's what I'm looking to know:

- Average gas mileage city/hwy
- Electrical/mechanical issues
- every day performance/drivability (especially in traffic)
- anything else you would care to comment on.

I know the manual 6 speed is not a popular option, but I haven't met an automatic transmission I can't break, hence my reason for pursuing it.

Thanks in Advance!

Hi - I've got 16K miles on mine. Gas mileage is around 18 mpg on the highway, 12-14 mpg if I drive it kind of aggressive around town. The size of the gas tank is the biggest issue, it's just small.

I've had no mechanical issues, have autocrossed and open tracked the car a couple of times and it does okay for a big car. You won't get the low end torque you are used to with the Cobra, but when you get the revs up, it flys. It's an easy car to drive in traffic, and the shifter is actually pretty good for a BMW.

BTW, I have a 97 Cobra 'vert.........love it.

Good luck with your choice!

Bill,

Thanks for the reply! I was starting to wonder why there were 218 views and no responses until yours. Good thing is that the wife will gladly put her car on the driveway so I can contemplate a black mustang with a white M6 side by each....

Just a point of view...on why not so many comments and some other inputs - on what you asked. I understand your concerns, but these are old old questions and concerns and have been covered over and over and over. Please understand I respect your concerns, but it is just so over discussed.

Your questions:
1. When buying a car like a M6 - why give hoot about gas mileage (these babies eat a lot of gas), if you want good gas milage get a Prius. :nono:
2. There have been so many comments about mechanical and electrical issues on M6's on this board you should search. Most are very positive! Learn to search. :byebye:
3. A manual is a manual is a manual ,in town it can sometimes be a pain, but of course you feel more with the car, with a manual transmision we all know that- why ask such a question. You use the gas and clutch peddle and it shifts OMG! I still can't believe you asked about using a manual in town around traffic. :nono:
4. This car was designed with the 7 speed SMG in the designer's mind and you are not going to break it! It is awesome, and as you've been reading it's one of the most outstanding transmissions ever built, and it shifts exactly like a manual, as it has a clutch. It is exactly like a manual only without a clutch peddle and is not an automatic and that is the major problem for those who buy a M5 or M6 and expect it to be like a automatic - It is not an automatic and no one should ever expect it to shift or handle like an automatic. :applause:

Snowball - thanks; I have been slowly plowing my way through this site's information. I am hard-core on manual transmissions because that's the level of driver engagement that I require, so it's merely personal preference. I have no doubt the SMG would edge out a properly driven manual, and I'm OK with that.

The gas mileage comment has little to do with econonmy. I'm just inquiring as to a gauge of what folks on this board are experiencing with the manual trans setup.

Mint, thank you for taking my input on the positive note as it was intended.

I have never owned an automatic (rented plenty though), and have been driving for over 35 years. I was really against the SMG before I owned it. So I understand your concern. But, I sure was wrong . :)

Gustav,

Thanks for helping keep this thread on track.

To those with SMG: This thread is not about which transmission setup is superior. It is about this forum members' personal experiences with their manual transmission M6 vehicles.

Had the older smg in my 650i (SMGII) and i have a 6spd now in my m6. all i can say is i loved the SMG when i had it, and from driving and SMG III i can tell you its even better. However, i went for the 6spd cause the car is way to much fun to drive in a true manual. that being said....i dont think you can go wrong
