Would value others opinion on a dilemma I am having at the moment.

I am trying to decide on whether to get M5 in May 2005 or get a Aston Martin Db7 with M5 next year delivery ( waiting list 2006 q2) - 2006 model

What do people think about M5 against Aston Martin DB7 or the Aston Martin DB9. Value your expert opinions !!

There is a thread in m6board about M6 versus AMV8 Vantage. Similar observations can apply here. But why are you considering DB7? That's no way near the M5 or M6!

M5 over DB9 easily. See the discussion in m6board.com

Get a DB9 with a manual transmission.

The following is from autoexpress.co.uk from last year

"There's been a shift in attitude at Aston Martin - the DB9 is to get an all-new manual gearbox. The move comes as a result of demand from traditionalist customers, who want this transmission instead of the sequential automatic with dash-mounted buttons. The conventional six-speed version will join the DB9 line-up towards the middle of next year, and is expected to cost around £3,000 less than the current model."

Here are three must-read articles about Aston Martin and Henrik Fisker. He was Aston Martin's director of design from 2001 until December of last year. Ian Callum, Jaguar's director of design (whose first Jaguar from start to finish will be the next XK which will have to comply with new European pedestrian safety regulations) also worked on the DB9 and styled the Vanquish and DB7.

Henrik Fisker used to work for BMW where he styled the Z8. A link to his new car company is shown below:

Reason for DB7....

1. Wanted a sports coupe for once as I have had 5 x 5 series BMW (518, 530, 540, 545, M5 E46). Will be having children soon so time enough for 4 door cars soon, only young once idea!!

2. Would go for the DB9 but waiting list is long and as new to marque, don't get pushed up the list. BUT if I have DB7 that changes dramitically.

3. Also, plan is to keep the DB7 was 6 -10 months and then move to maybe a year old DB9. The insurance costs currently for the DB9 are rather astronomical, approx £4,000. This is becuase I haven't driven a similar 'supercar' before. Interestingly the M5 would only cost be £1000, and the DB7 only £1100.
Interestingly, purchasing the cars there is not much in it between the M5 and DB7, and only a little bit more for the DB9.
Big difference in depreciation costs though especially with M5!!

4. I suppose part of it is the just the cache of owning an Aston Martin....plus have you listened the sound of a V12 engine even idling on as Aston Martin. This last point is really important to me, and I was a little disappointed to hear the poor feedback from those who got the M5 regarding a disappointing sounding exghaust note.

But I must say I have been avoiding the Message board as I know the excitement and anticipation among members with the first M5 arrivals would be infectious and start to make me question the above plans !!

Sensibly, thanks for the advice and I will check the M6 board and make a decision. I will own a M5 whether this year May or next year summer.:M5thumbs:

depends what you are looking for, but from a purely asthetic standpoint i would say there is no contest--the new astons are imo the most beautiful cars made right now..and the e60 is well, let's just say not.

i really feel for your tough decision....... :confused3
the DB7 is beautifull, but it is very old, and i have my doubts about the quality of that car. The new astons are simply stunning! DB9 and AM V8.
Im sure you can buy a DB9 somewhere, and if you can afford such a car, the insurance shouldnt be the problem ;)
the db7 sucks.Looks great but is a based on a jaguar xjs.one or two of the final limited edition models were ok to drive, but they're not good sports cars or GTs.

If you want a sports car go for a 911,nothing else comes close.for the sort of money you are talking a 997 s or 996 tt are easily within reach. The 997s sounds great too.
Saigon,

You can buy my Vanquish (V12 6 litre) :haha: :haha: if you want .........much better than DB7 or DB9 and a good bit quicker, completley different drive to the M5 but will get you noticed :7: :7:

Can post some pics if you are interested ?
saigon, in case you get serious...i have a good friend who owns a high end car dealership north of london. he has a db7 in inventory now and just sold a db9 v12...i think he has good turnover on astons and i would highly recommend giving him a call. i'm not affiliated in any way with his business, have just known him from banking for the past 5 years and he's become a friend. he's a smart and honest guy who's built up a reasonable car business outside his primary banking business. nice facility up in northamptonshire. pm me if you have interest in contacting him.

Thanks for the opinion MarkF regarding the Porsche 911. Quite a few of my friends have advised me to try it. Still not sure about the looks, but will go down to a dealer this weekend. Also having another drive of DB9.

About the Vanquish, wouldn't mind see pictures... I agree it is in a league of its own.;) How do you think it may compare to the drive/ performance of M5 / M6?
My E39 M5 is every day road car, wife, kid in back etc but obviously can "go" when you want it to.

Vanquish is out and out sports car, sequential gearbox, no clutch farily fierce gear changes, can still drive it in traffic OK though. The V12 sound is just amazing.

Did a standing start head to head, both cars in sport mode :D :D and the Vanquish was well up on the M5

Will post some pics later.

I am glad to see that there are others who have same opinion as me about keeping both types of car. I agree the V12 engine sounds like nothing else I have heard and appeals to something not summed up by performance figures.

Don't get me wrong, i think the M5 is a great car, and the technology is amazing.. am first to lust after it...but there is something else beyond technology and more emotive about owning cars at this level.

Bit deep, I know...but that's how I have begun to feel, hence the consideration of the Aston. Maybe age or maturity ??? ;)
i can vouch for the sound of the v12. when i went to visit his operation he had a v12 and he started it for me....wow, what a sound!! wouldn't let me drive it however...:(

he did pick me up at the train station in his conti gt though....:)
What would have been really nice if the circumstances permitted, would have been to drive the new M5 before making decision. Dealer on my back about completing finance paperwork. Probably need to settle on course of action before weekend is out....Ho hum

Are you sure it is a sequential? I thought it was actually a manually shifted automatic, but a world class version of it...

V12 Vanquish has the clutch pedal-less 6-speed manual transmission from Magnetti Maralli.

it is the DB9 that uses 6-speed automatic that you can shift gear via the pedal behind steering wheel.
Speaking strickly from an asthetic point of view it's no contest. The Aston is a smoother sexier design. An absolutely beautiful car. The 5 and 6 can't hold a candle to it, they are bulbous and fugly.

From the standpoint of performance and technology the M's are superior in almost every way. If you want to get oo's and aa's get the Aston. If you don't care about looks or attention and want pure performance from a sedan, get the M. You'll still get stares but they might be "ugh" instead of oo's and aa's.

Absolutely beautiful !!! Driving a Vanquish must put a big smile on your face....The gunmetal(?) grey is probably most fitting for this car.
Do you want to pm me with - What year make / mileage ? Any added options ? price ???:)
saigon, did you get my pm?
