I am strongly considering buying an M5 so I test drove a 2000 540i 6-speed today. How would you guys compare the M5 to the 540? The 540 drove great and felt as though it had quite a bit of power. It felt strong up to 105 mph. Where is the M5's extra power felt most? At high speeds or low speeds? Other than acceleration do the two cars drive about the same or is there a noticable difference? If so, what is different? Sorry for all the questions. Thanks

The M5 feels a little bit stronger in the low speed and much stronger in the high speed. I'm everytime impressed again how fast my M5 climbs from 120 to 170mph. Above 170 up to the limit (approx. 185) it takes longer. Another difference is that the M5 has an harder suspension and has this nice sport button which you can't order for an 540i. This When you press this button the configuration of the engine elektronics change completely and it feels really strong. Also the power steering gets more direct than. Hope that helps.

Lots of differnce: (1998 540i 6speed sport vs. 2000 M5)

Steering has a better feel, more responsive.
Brakes are better, more responsive,
Tires/grip better
Power - much much more.
Sound - better

All in all I think it is very much worth the extra cost.
