I have 2000 M5 with 48,000 miles. On starts, the engine revs a little, cycling in maybe a 500RPM range. It doesn't rev high or anything.

I searched the forum and haven't found anything about this problem. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks.

Mine seems to do this on cold starts. Not sure about seeing the RPMs go up that much, but I can hear it going: "rrrrrr----rrrmmm---rrrrrrrrr----rrrmmmmm" (this is at idle). Once at operating temperature it stops though.

Cycling in a 500 rpm range from a cold start does not sound normal to me. I'd guess your ICV valve needs cleaning, MAFS, air filters, or vacuum leak.

I think the range of +- 500hp might be a little high, if not unintentionally exaggerated, but cold starts definitely have a bit of RPM hop to them sometimes. Albeit minimal, it's not abnormal unless it's noticeably drastic.

If you would characterize your idle as "hunting" or "bouncing", then search on those and you'll find some of the things Resinears mentioned.
