There are two things I don't like on the E34 , the cooling system (both S38 and M60) and the headlight low beam.

I'm thinking the quickest way to get a headlight upgrade is to find some good LED lights that will fit into the fog light housings and go for the brightest globe I can find for the low beam headlights.

I think the high beam is adequate but there's room for improvement.

I don't really want to try and stuff a HID system into the M5 unless someone has come up with a solution that doesn't look like a mess.

What have you done to the lighting in your M5 ?

New headlights, foglights and GE +120% bulbs. If you cant see enough maybe visit eye specialist. Xenon is next step.

I replaced my bulbs with extra bright ones from a UK retailer (Halfords).

they where expensive (for bulbs anyway), being about £25 each, but, they work so much better.

I don't think they sell them anymore, I think the European Union rules banned them!

I've been working on a set of brackets and modifications to retrofit Hella DE Bi-Xenon modules (http://www.myhellalights.com/index.p...90mm-bi-xenon/). So low beams will be xenon only and high beams will be xenon and OEM halogen. Fairly straight forward project with a little wiring and a new mounting bracket which will be printed off and have some bonded in mounting positions. Looking forward to having much improved lighting with OEM like integration and easy to source replacement parts! Not a cheap solution but in my opinion will offer the best option for lighting, same units used by Singer on their 911 restorations.

I used a xenon kit from one of the various internet suppliers. On my 91, i did get a bulb warning, but there are work arounds for that. On both my 93 and 94 there were no bulb warnings. Depends on the version of the LKM, i suppose.

No affiliation other than I did buy a set of the Squared adapters, I have not installed them yet though. When I bought my car it had a cheap set of H1 replacement HID bulbs plonked in the low beam sockets, that is NOT the way to do it.

My biggest concern is having OBC alerts , that would be a pain to have every time the headlights were used

From what I've been able to find out, the LED light box has a resistor that is supposed to simulate the resistance that the OBC is looking for. The HID lights can be problematic, but there was one source that said to use a canbus wiring harness to solve the problem. Not sure about that, I need to look into it further. FWIW the cheap kit that was installed before I bought the car didn't cause any problems.

The LED retrofit kits just arent there in terms of performance, regardless of what lumens they are rated at.

OBC codes not an issue if you wire up properly. We have setup a few E30 and E34 conversions and the difference is drastic.
