So the last couple of days I did a lot of searching on the forums and I luckily found out I'm not the only owner who has this problem <?xml:namespace prefix = "v" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" /><v:shape id=Picture_x0020_2 style="HEIGHT: 11.25pt; WIDTH: 29.25pt; VISIBILITY: visible; mso-wrap-style: square" alt="http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/images/smilies/roflmao.gif" type="#_x0000_t75" o:spid="_x0000_i1025"><v:imagedata o:title="roflmao" src="file:///C:\Users\Johan\AppData\Local\Temp\msohtmlclip1\01\clip_image001.gif"></v:imagedata></v:shape><?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
Of course, it's unacceptable for a M5 to be slow so I think I should do something about it. Since I haven't had much time on hand the last year, I haven't done any maintenance whatsoever.
<o:p></o:p>

I own the car now for 3 years and it has always been a bit slowish compared to other stock M5s, but I believe the power output is gradually getting worse, especially at low RPM. During my first year of ownership misfires occurred once in a few months. One year ago it was once per month, now it’s once per week. Always occurs when above 6000RPM. The VANOS noise is normal and hasn’t changed during my ownership last 3 years.

These names are from members of this forum. MarkQCs M5 ran just fine and it has the same 4th gear spec as the drivers manual states. SleeperE39 also had problems similar to mine.

<o:p>So with the knowledge of these codes and the history of the maintenance of the last couple of years, I thought some of undermentioned parts could be replaced.... But I don't want to throw everything on it at the same time, so what is logical here? I thought about this order:</o:p>

MAF Sensor

Could be a good candidate, so I tested the fuel flow. Appears way too low!
1. Test fuel flow L/Hr. = 101L/hr, corrected according to pressure, temp & altitude = 99L/hr.<o:p></o:p>
2. Clean MAF
3. Retest fuel flow L/Hr. =<o:p></o:p>
4. MAF test – Direct voltage Method<o:p></o:p>
5. Replace MAF
So I will first try to clean it and see if it gets better. If the L/Hr. does get better, I will replace it right away.

O2 sensors pre-cat
If new MAFs don't bring the desired effect, I think I might go for the O2 sensors. They're cheaper and easier to replace than the CPS.

All Camshaft Positioning Sensors
If above doesn't solve all of the problems (which it probably won't) I think the next step is to replace 3 CPS (one I already did not so long ago)

Spark Plugs<o:p></o:p>
According to BMW the spark plugs for the M5 should be replaced every Inspection II. My M5 isn't up for Inspection II yet, but at this stage I might replace those, although I don't think they can have that huge of an effect on the slowness.

Vanos
I can try to do the VANOS test and see if it passes that. I have no troubles with the VANOS afaik, so I think it will pass, but you never know.
This will give me a clue on whether I will have to do some maintenane on it, correct?

Fuel pressure<o:p></o:p>

If that doesn't help, I think about testing the fuel pressure. Will that give a clue about what the state of the fuel pump is?
Better yet, when is it wise to replace the Fuel pump and/or fuel pump relay? What symptoms should be present?<o:p></o:p>

O2 sensors aftercat<o:p></o:p>
<o:p>I thought I would ignore the error codes for now, because they don't have any/much influence on performance. </o:p>

What is the expected maintenance now my car run for 100k miles / 160k kilometers??
Am I missing something??? Do you guys think this is a good approach?

I think it is good plan. Start with cheapest method, cleaning up MAFs to see if you have the immediate improvement.

I would do in order
MAFs
O2 sensors (also check for any cracks around the bungs)
CPS sensors (if one failed, other 3 will follow sooner or later)
Vanos test (might be good idea to clean and refresh the solenoid if it fails the test)
Fuel pump (expensive)

I had similar misfire codes but was first caught with a CPS code (inlet driver's side). The car fluctuated between running a bit slow to terribly slow. I replaced all four sensors at 103k and have since put a little over 1000 miles on the car. No codes have come up since and performance across the RPM band vastly improved. However, I never had a pre-cat O2 sensor code.

Cleaning the MAFs will be my next job, but from a fuel flow perspective I am hitting what are considered to be normal numbers. My FPR is relatively new, but I have no knowledge of a prior fuel pump replacement, it may be in my near future as a precautionary move.

If you know for a fact the CPS are original to the car I would start there. You may have a few issues but try to go after one variable at a time.

Post-cat O2s dont do much when they are good, but if they are bad who knows how it is affecting the fuel trims. I would start with the KNOWN problem first, replace the post-cat O2s, then go through your diagnostic procedure as you have it listed because that is thorough and pretty proper.

Also a bit weird but you may want to check the battery

I'd do MAFS first, followed by CPS x 3 as well as all vanos o-rings and clean out your solenoids.

Also as mentioned check for cracks around the pre-cat 02 bungs and get them welded (cost next to nothing) even if you don't yet change the sensors themselves. Spark plugs would probably be worthwhile too.

I'd get in and do this all at once as this is really maintenance items that are due and I think will all contribute to an improvement.

I doubt fuel pump as I don't think they go slowly off but tend to fail totally, but filter would be an idea.

Those multi misfires always lead me to coilpacks. Check which code comes first and start swapping a couple around or go ahead an replace them all with new plugs.

I agree, the car is getting slower. Was just on the highway swapping places with a maserati vertie, but out of nowhere a singapore gray f10 snuck up next door, gawdamn that thing freaking moves!!!

This is the correct answer! We do know that the post O2s have a significant effect on fuel trim and the documentation has been posted many times.

The battery is the next choice because it takes a lot of power to recover coils at 6000 rpm.

Before you do the MAF test you need to understand it is not a test of MAFs but a fuel injector bandwidth test. The bandwidth is basically set by your O2 sensor at least it is based on there readings. If you have any questions about the pre O2 then replace them when you are doing the posts.

The best way to test the MAFs is to unplug them and see how the drivability changes and how that effects the MAF test. Do the MAF test plugged in then unplug them and drive for 200-500 miles to let the adaptions change and do the MAF test again. If it is undriveable with them unplugged. Clean them and try again. No improvement look for air leaks, if none then replace the MAFs. Again you will get no usable results unless the 4 O2 sensors are working correctly.

Once the O2s are in you need to drive several hundred miles to let the adaptions change before you start any tests. That said do the MAF test frequently to see if the number is changing, once it stabilizes then that is the number you look at.

How old are your sparkplugs? If it was me I would want to look at the plugs the same day I did the O2s, for the price no sense in putting old plugs back in. They also are known to cause this type of misfire problem and reduce performance.

Once you have the plugs and O2s done then you can do some real testing on the MAFS once the car has re adapted.

About the post-cat O2 sensors: I've read different stories on them and my general feeling is not a lot of people from this board have replaced them and still their cars run fine (even with a lot more mileage done than mine). That doesn't necessarily mean that I shouldn't take it into account, but I thought to check the other more common problems first.

I didn't add in the OP that the fault codes about the post-cat O2 sensors were only present the first time I hooked up a peake reader, so god knows how old these codes were. After resetting, they haven't returned yet the last 200 miles. Besides, there are multiple sorts of codes about the post-cat O2 sensors, with this "aging" type to seem the least definitive. With this information in mind, do you guys still think it's a good idea to replace them upfront? Or do some of the other maintenance first?

Could you guys elaborate on this? Does the battery have this much control over the engine performance? The battery has never failed on me before in cold Dutch weather. Would a battery test give enough insight in whether it's is able to give enough juice in high-rpm situations?

What kind of air leaks?

Once the O2s are in you need to drive several hundred miles to let the adaptions change before you start any tests.
Isn't there a way to reset some variables with diagnostic software like INPA or DIS to speed up this process?

60.000km/37.000 miles and 4 years old. It seems to me they're not due for replacement yet, but I did put them on the list in the OP to be sure.

Filter was replaced 60.000km/37.000 miles and 4 years ago. With this in mind, do you still think it's due for replacement? About the fuel pump, how will I know that it's failing? I don't want to replace it now, but if there are some signs I should look at, I'd like to know. If I would do a fuel pressure test, will that give me insight in the status of the fuel pump?

Isn't there a way to reset some variables with diagnostic software like INPA or DIS to speed up this process?

I will say this you need to have 4 perfect O2 sensors to have the DME know what is going on.

Do a search with my user name yoiu will see it took 2 years to convince, until a tuning god had sympathy for my cause. He pretty much set things straight. Post O2s play a huge role.

Miles don't kill O2s as fast as age does. Has to do with the way platinum oxidizes. I have explained it before, the short is that a car sitting will oxidize platinum faster than a car run everyday.

You should reset the adaptions maybe before you do anything but definitely after you replace one part and then wait befor you decide on the second replacement. Adaption reset is available in INPA DIS and many lesser/after market progs.
Air leaks? Zillions do a search then ask.

Guys, it totally surprised me but.... after only cleaning the MAFs (and doing nothing else), the car runs GREAT

Instead of 101L/hr, now 148L/hr. Instead of 6,1s from 80-120km/h in 4th gear, now 4,6s :wroom::wroom::wroom:

Torque is back, no CELs and it's perfect now!

I will replace the MAFs with new ones and I think I won't replace the other sensors yet. Of course I will still keep the maintenance list for the near future when performance drops again, but for now... I think it's just fine as it is.

Everyone thanks for your replies, I will keep them in mind.
