Saw the "One Lap" cars at Sebring on Tuesday.Part of the competition was doing hot laps around the track. There were about 15 Bimmers including a few regular 3 series cars with M3 motors. The M5-driven by Car & Driver staffers-was bone stock and looked good on the track.Keeping in mind that they were all on street tires, the cars were quite fast. The Renntech Mercedes was really hauling...I understand it cost $330,000-is this possible?
Renntech has an E- series car (4 door, and VERY luxurious) that I checked out. Specs: full power leather Recaro seats, special trims/woods/etc. Automatic, 0-60 in 3.7, top speed of 210mph, and every day driveable. Seriously amazing cars. They also had a CLK job that was rumoured to do 0-60 in 3.4 and 220 mph. Gorgeous 20" wheels too. 14" Alcon rotors with 6 piston calipers, etc. The E was to cost close to 240 i think, and the clk was going for about 350. Not bad, given what you get. Not bad at all.
Back to the OneLap - the M5 SCORCHED its competition in its class "Luxury Sedan" - this from the web site:

Oh please stop... I don't know about the rest of you guys but I'm starting to get embarassed by all the kudos this car gets. It's getting to the point where I can predict the outcome before finishing a magazine article or any road test.
However, in this case I think the drivers made a huge difference.
