Hi all. I’ve got this facelift e39 m5 which the head unit works fine however the radio or any sound doesn’t work. The red light next to the power/volume knob never lights up. I’ve tried swapping the amp with another one I have lying around but it didn’t change anything. This spare amp also might be broken? Or is there something I’m missing. Please help.

It's more than likely the radio module if the power and left side buttons don't work on the headunit. I recently had the same issue.
The best solution in my case was to get a good used unit and replace. I tried electrical contact cleaner at the plugs in case it was a corrosion issue but it didn't help. It's the same or easier level of difficulty to replace as the amp and it's in the same location. Pics and p/n of the module shown in the link in my past post.
You might want to try Baris at Carphonics in the UK. Shipping might be prohibitive but he's well regarded in the BMW community in the UK. He'll sell you a guaranteed repaired or upgraded unit.
