Guys,

Remember that the main reason for developing the GTR was to homologate the BMW Motorsport's Racing version for the ALMS. Since then, BMW bailed out of the ALMS for 2002. :( I don't see why they should bother now to continue with this project.

Also, I believe the sky high 250,000 USD price tag included some sort of season long support arrangement for the race teams who would buy the GTR and race it for a season. As you will recall, the base power was announced to be 350 HP which is also ridicilously low for such a car. My guess, is that the race teams would tune it to 450 HP+ (depending on the rules of the series they would run them in). I really think that the BMW did not want normal customers to buy the GTR at all. Possibly, worrying about not up to the BMW standard reliability and long term support commitments.

Ufuk

Detuned to 350 HP would seem to take care of any reliability issues.

It is my understanding that BMW would have to build one car per week and 2000 engines.

It looks to me that they could use the engines in the next 5 series and make that 2000 easy.

And they could surely build 52 cars and sell those. For the street sales versions, the price could come way down.

I guess it could still happen. I could see one in my garage if the pricing was reasonable. :D

very nice! I want that carbon fiber airbox cover!!! :D haha... I wonder if my parts department can get a hold of one for me.. :p

You can actually get that carbon fiber engine cover! Nowack's got them if you'll recall. Maybe you could see about buying one for your car. For me, I'd much rather maybe get a RED cover! I think it was Hamann that put one on their M5.

I know about the Nowack one.. but I like this one with the M Power on it! hehe...

Does this GTR come with manual or SMG?
Since the GTR is developed to homologate the ALMS car, it doesn't have the SMG because sequential transmissions are not allowed according to the ALMS rules sanctioned by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO). That would make Porsche even more upset!

The racing GTR of '01 has a six-speed Hewland (British company) dog-leg transmission with straight cut gears with dog rings to effect gear selection. There is no synchromesh mechanism to smooth the gear changes, so they say it is a wild action if you don't match the revs perfectly. It also doesn't have a flywheel, so getting the car going from standstill is a tricky action. I don't know how much of this applies to the roadgoing version.

Sports Car International has reviewed the GTR in May '02 issue and compared it with the touring cars of the '70s. I recommend the article.

Jetboy: The GTR engine is a V8 but I don't think it was taken from a M5. It's only 4.0 liters whereas the M5 engine is 4.9 liters. Maybe they might have based it on the M5 engine. I could be wrong though. Anybody else want to chime in here?

A Hartage (spelling?) is quite a car, and a better deal than the GTR! The price of the GTR ($250,000) refects the fact that most people who would buy it would be race teams, and that they could extract more than 350 horses. The price includes several (can't remember how many) engine and transmission rebuilds done by BMW technicians. These would be needed if the engine was made to produce 450-500 HP with a no synchro trans, just like the race version. Also, RACER did a piece about the GTR and they said that it had a very small flywheel, but perhaps they were confused.

Rocket,

Didn't the M brand manager say that 2 M3 GTR were sold... one in the Middle East and the other in Spain ? I guess these pics are of the one in the Middle east. ie Bmw boards with Arabic words.

You could be right Dook. This car might be in Dubai
