Ok after owning the 3.6 for 2 weeks I have the followg problems and would like to beinted in the right direction as to what they could be.

1) Loose Steering, a fair bit of play

2) Suspension clunk from front, none of the linkages are gone. Its a metal to metal sound and its well loud.

3) Engine not smooth on lower rpms, idle fine but when driving under 4000 rpm at constant speed its that tiny bit jerky.....might be air leak but dont know where to start

4) Runnning a bit rich, getting quite thristy on fuel now, where is the oxygen sensor? Again Im pointing towards an airleak but dont know where to start

Finally, does anyone know of any good freindly garages which know what they are doing with these cars and arent too expensive.....please dont recommend anyone in Bexleyheath, had real bad experience there.

Not sure about your problems, but I took my car to Birds in Uxbridge the other day and they were excellent. Had a look around the workshop there and as well as the other 4 e34 M5's, there was some serious cars. To me, any garage that has those sort of motors, knows what they are doing!

Yeah I might just go there.

I do like doing some things myself, engine stuff I leave to the specialists.

How much do Birds charge?

There are a couple of threads that deal with the M5´s steering adjustment, do a search on the site.

The almost unnoticeable jerkiness that you feel when riding under 4,000rpm could be a dirty crankshaft position sensor, all you have to do is clean it, but it´s hard to get to. Have an experienced M5 mechanic take a look.

Pepsmeister,

Thanks for the suggestion, will have the sensor looked at.

I noticed another new problem, the flexi joint on the exhaust manifold has spile and is blowing. Apparently I have to change the manifold!! The Lambda sensor comes after this, this would affect the fueling wouldnt it? The Lambda sensor must be picking up diffeent signals to whats actually happeneing. Better get the welder out and fix it for now. Will change it when more surplus cash in bank as its about a £1000 job.

Extremely bad service, mislead me into buying stuff I didnt need and bullshitted about realy expensive stuff that didnt really do anything special. Mapping services appauling. Mechanical work not all that especially since bolts were left undone, things werent put back as they should have been. There are a few places in that area but Im not mentioning names.

Depends really mate. I just had an oil service there for under £120 inc VAT.
Seemed reasonable enough to me..

Give them a call, ask for Pinder (who is the service guy) and see what he says.

I found him very helpful & professional an art which is lost at my local BMW dealership!!!

Oh and they deal with our cars all the time so their experience is second to none.

1. Steering links worn. Steering box needs replacement or adjustment. Steering column nut needs to be tightened.

2. Perhaps your upper thrust arm bushing is worn. If that is worn then your lower control arm ball joint is probably worn which means your sway bar links are probably worn...you get the picture.

3.Hmm not sure. Most people complain about the engine running rough at idle and smooth at speed. When you say "jerky" is that in any gear? Anyways as you just got the car you should probably do a fairly major job of changing most if not all consumables such as spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil+filter, brake fluid and coolant. Hopefully one of these things will coincedently cure your problem, if not they should be done anyway.

4.Don't really know. Just what do mean by thirsty? Mileage REALLY goes down if you are having fun in the car :wroom:
