Hi Folks,

Long time no post.......

but having been through a couple of years without an M5/Alpina, I am thinking of getting a new one. There is an Alpina B10 V8S for sale on pistonheads. Its done a lot of miles - 127k, but is pretty cheap.

What are your thoughts on the cost of owning one of these in comparison to an E39 M5?

I am sorely torn between another M5 and the B10S - you are a knowledgeable crowd so I look forward to hearing your views.

Also, who thinks £9.5k for a B10S is a good deal?

Cheers

I've just had a peek at the advert and it all looks too good to be true. Despite the mileage, I'd expect the advertised price to be upwards of £12k. In fact, with a full service history and 5 green lights from a reputable indy, I'd expect the screen price to be nearer £15k. High mileage B10 V8 models are regularly advertised nudging 5 figures on a private sale so why isn't this one showing showing a healthy premium? I don't know anything of the car or the seller so perhaps they are just being realistic in the current market (but that would be a first...)

As far as M5 v B10, it all comes down to personal preference - whether you want the brute force through a manual box or an auto with optional steering wheel control and a bit more exclusivity!

I don't agree Chas... E39s are now quickly dropping in price. Remember they are now 2 model series old.
We'll soon be nearing the point that E39 B10 V8 & M5 will be more economical to part out than to sell as a complete vehicle.

B10 V8S's are of course quite special but there is lots of choice in the same market.

Thanks guys - very grateful. Any other views from anyone else ?

I used to own an M5 which was awesome. the running costs were pretty high - i had extended the warranty with BMW every year, which on the face of it was expensive, but I got more than my money's worth each year. Question is - how expensive is running a B10 V8 or V8S relative to the M5?

In BMW Car magazine, they suggested that the running costs were only slightly higher than for a stock 540i of the same era...does anyone have any experience of this that they would like to share?

The choice is currently an e46 M3 as an approved used from BMW, or pocket the difference, and buy an alpina / M5 from an independent.

Any thoughts?

Cheers Trev

In my opinion the E39 M5 or E46 M3 would have higher costs than the E39 B10 models. There are quite a lot of special parts in those cars which can go wrong.

540i & B10 V8 probably have quite comparable running costs. The main E39 operational items such as brakes, suspension rubbers, engine servicing, body panels are all identical and can easily be found at salvage yards if required. The only attention points would be the gearbox (Link) and the headgaskets on a pre-facelift B10 V8.

The B10 V8S would be slightly more expensive due to the specialist Brembo brakes and 19" wheels. There would be no potential for headgasket issues and worst case the engine would be a nice upgrade for a B8 or B10 V8.

I agree with Kees. The car looks alright to me. If you are in the position to take a look and service history is ok (including free of major repairs) I'd buy it. Power and torque are huge and with the autobox it drives very relaxing AND quick!

Hey if it's as clean as it looks and no horror stories or soon to come big expense then worth every penny. Remember this time of year is notoriously slow for selling cars(4x4s aside the last few weeks)so the price shows that too

As for the mileage if she drives nice then it's not a problem, nobody outside the car knows it so when you're driving a rarer than rocking horse poo car you still got that kudos:wroom:

If I had the £ hanging around I would:confused::confused:

Just to clarify, my comments were related to the asking prices of these cars, not the values. I can only echo what Stevie has just said. If it checks out clean, it's a bargain. But I'll stand by my first post; I'd still expect a car that good to be showing a higher ticket price from a dealer.

so it looks like they have dropped the price on the B10s.

Not sure what to do..... I am scared by the high mileage, but I love the colour and spec of the car.....

And its a 3 hour drive from my house to view it......

A friend of mine has an Alpina Blue B10S and says its wonderful, but to be honest, his has done less that 70k. This one is almost the same again.

I'll talk to the wife.... She usually says 'for god's sake man, just buy it' or ' over my dead body' etc. so I'll get a pretty clear view. I think she'll come down on the latter though....

As the guy in the advert says, there are 46 of them in the UK, so there will be another one.....

If only I had bought the very nice Bluewater one that came up last year.....

sometimes you have to have a little faith. I bought mine (check Supersaloons) without first seeing it. Got myself a oneway ticket into deep and dark Germany, had a pocket full of euro's and thought, what the heck, if it doesn't fit me I'll buy another oneway ticket back!

I agree with Hessel .

I bought my B8 unseen , although I'd had lengthy communications with the previous owner
to suss him/the car out .

When I bought it , it had 205,000 kms (127 mls) and it's now got 245,000 kms (152 mls) .
It's still got the original head gasket on (much to the horror of some enthusiasts) and I use
it everyday 365/365 all weathers . I've never had any engine trouble at all .

As long as it's got a full service history that can be substantiated , and it looks like this one
does , it shud be fine .

Go for it man , go for it . they're great cars , I've driven one a coupla times .

This is a previous thread , maybe it helps you ;

Good luck !!
