did you see that write up in radartest.com. It ranks the diffuser and k40 radar detector bad. As for concieled units, it has one of the escorts as first, and i forget which diffuser was ranked high. but definately check this out, i dont know how unbiased the info is, but its good to look at

Fas,

I owned an M3 in a past life with the stealth K40 system including the diffuser. I thought I had a good system until I bought a Valentine 1 for one of my other vehicles. The V1 kicks the crap out of the K40! It is just not as stealth and therefore maybe not as high on the "coolness" factor?!

I would get the V1 and use the money you save to buy other upgrades for your M5!

my 2 cents.

hey andy,
yes i agree. they say the k40 is bad. what they do like is the escort consiled radar detector. this is what i am curious about. does anybody have any experience with the escort concieled version.

Just installed the excort SR-1 into my 00. It was a lenthy process and needs to be done by a professional, it took about 5 hours but it is perfectly installed.

The time consuming aspect is from running and concealing all the wires through the factory grometts. There is a back license plate sensor that needs to be feed through the trunk wiring conduits. Then the head unit needs to mounted under the front license plate and the wires feed through the engine compartment via the air filter through the firewall. And finally, there is the display unite that connects both sensors via an interface module that needs to be tucked behind the dash.

I located the tiny remote display unit in the overhead module just behind the convenience lights and it looks great.

Total installation costs were $999. I stayed in the install bay to make sure that everythings was done properly and that nothing was missed.

I must speak up. I have the K40 and love it. Wouldn't change with the info provided here. Good dectector = saves you from tickets. K40 just recently saved my butt several times up and down I5 from San Francisco to San Diego and back! Not sure if anyone recently has searched this board but before I bought a radar detector someone a while ago,(Sean, I think) had both and said they were essentially equivalent with the exception of the K40's stealth apeal. And looks do count (or the absense of them in the case of a radar detector). One other detail, the way I drive I'd worry about it wacking me on the head during hard cornering.

We all like to think that we have the best anything but from real users from this board they don't seem that different (except the cost!)

My $.02

I don't understand how you could get wacked on the head from the escort, it is mounted into the car.

I was referring to the ones velcro'ed onto the dash or visor.

I agree. I had a K40 in a Corvette and thought it was great...until I got a V1. The V1 is far superior in all bands. Sure, it looks funky, but so does a speeding ticket on your driving record.

Barry et al,

I never got a ticket while the K40 was in use and I am certainly do not mean to imply they are useless! However, Since I actually simultaneously used both in my M3 for a period of about 3 weeks, I can tell you that the V1 will ALWAYS kick the K40's butt in range. It consistently picked up quicker and was more accurate in every instance. And for a lot less money that the $1200.00 or so needed for the stealth mode K40. What you do not get obviously is the diffuser... no biggie in Houston since not much laser in use!

Again, I am not bashing K40... just simply saying I (IMHO) think the V1 is a better bargain.

Enjoy your K40!

later...

This is the 1st time I'm pasting so here goes........ This is from April about other experiences with both detectors that I found on this board FYI. V1 does seem to react "sooner" from the front only.

have had the V1 from Shawn for a week now.
My K 40 stealth and the V1 have not interfered with each other at all, no "leakage" as they say.
So far I have found the following:
The V1 is faster identifying burgalr alarms from the front and much slower from the rear. They are equal from
the sides. I have driven around trying to sniff out traps to no avail. On the way to the Auto show I saw a pair of
cops sitting on the shoulder of the opposite side of the Parkway, the V1 picked them up sooner. This
weekend I'm going to try to coax a state trooper and present client into helping me out.
With laser or "instant on" no detector will be much help, unless it jambs the signal which the K 40 does. Also
in the event that you get pulled over for speeding a visable detector is gona get you the ticket. However, with
the K 40 stealth mounted system the cop can't see it. If the cop is not a pr..., or a bi... and your attitude is
good he may let you go. Clear advantage K 40. I'll post more info after this weekend.
Happy motoring

There are others that say the same and give the knod to the K40 from the rear. So what ever floats your boat

The advantage of the V1 may be due to the better "line of sight" being higher than the K40 bumper level or below (ie on the dash or visor??)
