just back from germany having a bit of Autobahn fun, but the engine is now making a knocking noise, first verdict from specialist is small end damage going for a second opinion. have been told BMW charged £18,000 for a similar job :sad2:
Anyone have any ideas on fixing said problem.

I hope it is not this problem - is the knocking noise happening when you start the car and then it dissapears after a minute - or is it present all the time?

How loud is it? does it vary in its frequency with revs, does it keep at the same noise level?

Small end damage? top? rod bearings? or what?
if the issue is con rod bearings or crank bearings, the sum 18000£ sounds very high. I had mine shifted 4 weeks ago and bearings + oil pump + sump gasket = 450eur + 6-8hours of work. They can be changed with the engine in place.

18,000 pounds sounds like the price for a brand new engine, if they are still available, plus 5 weeks of a rental car so the newby techs at the dealer can learn how fix your car and break it in for you.:confused3

Go elsewhere def. and good luck,

Greg

Cornodbearing = Bigendbearing
Piston-pen-bearing = Smallendbearing

For GBP 18k, I can only imagine that an AT engine is being quoted. In Europe, the bare cost of an AT engine is ~11k Euro ex VAT! Then you'll have to add the labour +small parts ect!

But that usually isn't necesary. For the B36, BMW offers a new short block with pistons for ~Euro 1600 ex VAT (Dutch price). I recently learnt on a German forum that there was an action that included the cranckshaft as well. The pistons alone cost ~200 Euro each.

For the B38, one has to buy a new set of pistions and a seperate short block (if necessary).

It comes and goes, you can hear it when driving as you increase the revs but also there when at idle. it appears sometimes as i start the engine other it starts after a few seconds. The specialist used some listening equipment and said the noise was defening near the small end location. It can be heard over easily over the normal engine noise.??

I am considering taking it apart myself, but a little apprehensive about what i find and then sourcing the parts to fix it.

Shuggy, a new engine is around £8000 + VAT. I think you can get most parts from the dealer, if your needing prices give me a shout, I know the parts supervisor at Eastern in Edinburgh.
cheers,
Phil.

Can you possibly record the engine noise if possible and post a link here? I think it would be useful for the members of the board to know what it sounds like when this is happening

I've had it checked out by a couple of specialists and yesterday by BMW, Second specialist says its the valve shimmies/ bucket tappets but BMW says Engine oil pressure which would account for the tappet noise.:sad2: Going to overhaul myself, once i can get an engine crane.

Hi Phil
I have taken the decision to overhaul the engine so will be needing a few parts: oil pump, gaskets, seals etc. does your contact get any discount on said parts.
do you know of anyone in our area selling an engine crane.
Cheers

Shuggy, I'll price the pump and see if there is a complete gasket set available. Are you needing piston rings - there's a set on ebay, this guy I know does the same sort of discount as Yewcorners Contact from what YC has posted in the past.
I get back asap with some figures.

(still on the Amsoil Brian?)
