Thinking of having suspension checked on KDS.

Don't fancy £200 at a stealer though.

Anyone know an independent who can do this within an hour's drive of Manchester?

Lots of tyre places have laser/computerised four wheel alignment kit. Avoid the supertracker type system, branches near me of Protyre usually have the computerised kit.

The BMW KDS involves a bit more, such as weighting the driver's seat, checking the ride height all round, and receiving lots of

Any decent independant tyre fitters should have a Hunter rig or similar.

Typically looking about £80-100, this again includes weights in the floorwells and boot. Check with them, as I think the computer also assumes a full tank of fuel

Amazing stuff!!!

Thanks guys,

Two concerns are:

1. Do they have the correct equipment for the job? (That Hunter stuff looks like it should be up to it!).

2. Will they have access to the specific M5 geometry settings?

Any comments?

The M5 3.8 saloon settings were in the computer of both the Protyre company equipment (not sure on the brand) and the Hunter kit used at my old specialist. Presumably the Touring settings are the same...? Since it was never a UK car, I'd have to hope so...

Thanks for the link, I used Wembley Tyre Services to realign the wheels. Appears the toe was out on three of the four wheels causing uneven wear. Hopefully sorted now!

Thanks everyone.

Done a search on Align My Car, but there are some garages who come up as having conventional sensors and some as having the imaging system.

Presume it's the imaging system I need to go for? Or will "conventional" be good enough?

Cheers,

Just booked in with a place in Halifax who are on www.alignmycar.co.uk and have the Hunter rig.

Had a long chat with the bloke on the phone and he seems very knowledgable, helpful and reasonable.

They charge £38+VAT for the initial measurement, which basically gives you a print out of where the car is currently at.

They can also tell you about worn bushes etc etc.

Then it's a similar rate per hour for adjusting stuff. I was banking on it being around £100, so should (fingers crossed) get it all sorted for that kind of money - subject to any new bushes etc being needed............

I'll post feedback so we all know whether this is a good place or not.......

Hi Rob

I'd honestly go for the BMW KDS, in my experience these other Guys charge circa £100, which gives you a good alignment but without loading the car with the 300/400kg required to simulate the car doing 70mph (not sure on the weight or speed stated). They also didn't check my ride height. I think its a false economy?

Just my opinion.

Cheers

Brian

Cheers Brian,

I hear what you're saying, but since I'm booked in (and cash is hard to come by at the moment!), I'll give them a whirl.

Just been to Sunside Service Station who have the Hunter set up and are on www.alignmycar.co.uk

They relieved me of £105 and I've come away a very happy bunny.

Very good service. Knowledgable and friendly bloke. Definitely recommended - I'll be going back.

HI ROb

Did they need to make any adjustments to the wheel angles?

Oh yes!!

The front was a good bit out. Rears well within tolerances.

They spent an hour or so getting the initial reading and then an hour adjusting it all.

If I get chance at some point, I'll post the print outs........

Anyone else done this recently? I really think I need to get mine done, as the lack of grip in my tyres at the moment is concerning me, and i feel the quality of the tyres and tread left should not be giving me the problems I have at the moment.

Also my closest place according to http://www.alignmycar.co.uk/ is a bloody Kwik Fit centre!!! I don't really have faith in these types of places....

I was after a full kds allignment, and only know how to find "hunter" equipped garages using the link I posted above. I guess I'll try speaking to my nearest which is a kwik fit, but there is also another one in cambridge listed, so i might drop in and see how competent they appear.

Am I being too harsh on Kwik Fit? Should I speak to them as well?

I don't think you are being too harsh. Personally, I wouldn't go anywhere near them..............

Would you trust the kind of place which sprays WD40 onto your granny's shockers, tells her they're knackered, and then flogs her 4 new ones......?

(Legal note - not suggesting for one minute that Kwikfit do that kind of thing, but I know it goes on within the tyre/exhaust industry - just in case someone wants to sue!!)

A good bodyrepair place should be able to do this. I know the place in Chelsmford can do it.
