Clarkson will often say that BMWs are driven by "cocks" (this has recently changed, as he now says that they all buy Audis now) but he usually does not say that he does not like a BMW from an engineering perspective. He loved the E60 M5 when he reviewed it on Top Gear and I'm pretty sure he owned one at some point.

Clarkson actually does like the M6 quite a bit--go to the Top Gear website and search for the series of videos titled "Man Fight".

I always take him with a bit of a grain of salt, he is an entertainer first and foremost.

I seem to recall that Clarkson's issue with the M6 was that it is $20K more than an M5 and according to him, this extra money only gives you 2 less doors. So, it's a value proposition, not a performance or quality thing for him. Odd that relative value (M5 vs M6) seems to bother him given his love for Aston Martins and Ferraris (and Benz).

it pisses me off how he always trashes the m6 and i just dont get why, every 2 door cost more than the 4 door of that same car, and the smg is great one you learn how to use it!! performance wise the m6 will romp any aston of the same model years and probably most of the current ones!!

I don't understand why everyone hates on the SMG when it is so easy to use. I mean you have to be mentally re-tarded or over the age of 90 to not know how to use it properly after a few weeks driving it! Besides that, it is much faster than a 6 speed!

I noticed you were careful not to say "over 55" :biggrinbounce:

the thing with the smg is you have to drive it like a stick, if you dont know how to manipulate the gear box then some people will think it shifts hard or clunky, god forbid they try and use the auto mode, the shifts are just as fast and crisp as any other single clutch sequential gearbox and it blips the throttle beautifully on down shifts

i drive m6 convertible standard. i would like to know what setting and what method is best for day to day driving. then also when racing is it best to launch ( traction off and gear setting in 6) and let it shift for you, i've been told it helps to to leave edc on comfort.

I generally drive on S3 or S4. Some people say that it shifts too slowly at this setting. IMHO! Not if you ease off the throttle during shifts.

On track, I drive in S6.

I don't participate in drag events, so you can discount my commenst for that. However, you cannot use the launch control often and expect your SMG to last long. The best way would be to modulate the throttle to get the best traction. Note that some wheel spin is good and desirable.

Leaving the EDC on comfort shall cause your shocks to absorb some of the power applied and thus reduce wheel spin by some degree. However, once you have broken inertia, it would act against you and hinder application of power to the wheels.

Do you think it would harm the gearbox to drive in sequential mode all the time? Hate drive mode. Will I beat a c63 that's also standard?

For a given set of driving habits, the answer is: absolutely not. The transmission is an Seqential MANUAL Gear box. That is what it was designed to do. In either mode the same things are happening (the clutching and shifting are done by the same mechanisms). The only difference is which brain (your's or the car's) decides to send the same electrical signals to the robotic shifter.

OR 64 1/2.

Clarkson is a hoot, I enjoy most all of it and yes, he is an entertainer. Perhaps this is why he is so entertaining, eh? I think he is fair to the Beasts but as with most journalists, his fussing about SMG is par for the course. It is a very good gear change once one learns how to use it (don't lift, never use drive-logic) ---- and it does not yield readily to the casual sampler. As with all things great and extraordinary, especially very good automobiles, some user skill is helpful - that and acquired skills. I like very much that my Beast challenges me to be skillful.

Agreed.

You don't tune SMG. You tune yourself to it. Then you are are in harmony with it and the Beast is at at your command.

And yes, Clarkson is an entertainer and most comments are made to invoke reaction. He is about as "Fair and balanced" as Fox news (and for the record I'm not a socialist).

the m6 is the worst car I have ever driven to launch off the line. When it's wet, my old 1.8 diesel launched better (to 20mph anyway!)
