Collected yesterday and driven 75 miles home from London's rush hour traffic , an absolute delight of a car that Bernie had owned for the past 14 years .....I am off to my bodyshop this morning to get his opinion on whether or not the driver's door and both front wings can be rescued or would be better simply replaced with original parts .

She has 165t miles / 264t kms on the untouched engine , so will promptly be left with my mechanic for the duplex chain and sprocket upgrade , as well as head gasket etc etc .

Can anyone confirm which engine the chain and sprockets are derived from...is it the S38B35 ?

Also , is the timing chain tensioner an upgraded part too ? if so , which one should be used ?

Wout / Stevie ....it emerges that only the front leather seats are heated on the base and the back rest , hence the 4 buttons .Also , she has a manual rear blind that clips up on either side...........

I'm so excited..............:wroom:

David, I started out in E28's (518 carb! then 528) and when I changed to the E34 I got this feeling that the thickness of the metal in the bodywork had gone down in the newer model - now you've got each type is there much of a difference ?

TBH Simon , i haven't had long enough to form an opinion based on experience but the E28 is very exciting and i am looking forward to doing her right .

I feel that the E34 has improved on many aspects , but speed is a feeling .....and the E28 is one exciting car to drive !

Progress report to follow...............:noSMG:

David

I was amazed by this deal, well done.

What year is it? its RHD so must be what, 1987 up?

Not sure about the cam sprockets, camshafts are not the same IIRC and the E28 uses double sprockets so I would be surprised if a pair turns out the same as the single E34 pair.

However, chain tensioners are the same IIRC. Had no luck finding it on RealOEM so better wait for the Gurus Steve and Ray to chime in before ordering any parts!!

One word of advice, whilst inspecting the wings and driver's door for rust, take a look at the A-pillars aswell..They go there aswell..

Other than that, wheel arches etc, but nothing as severe as the first series E28!

Enjoy!

Agreed , just driven through some great country lanes to see the bodyshop guy but he was out delivering a car....still a lovely drive anyway ....the E28 M5 feels really torquey and go kartish in comparison to the E34.....

Congratulations mate.

Youve just bought the BEST M5 ever.

The others were good (esp 3.8l 6pd E34) but nothing has really done it the way the original did it.

I know ive had all of them bar the E60 (bought M6 insteadouich)

You know what, next year im planning to move to a bigger house with a seperate out door garage and Im just going to have to find a minter.

I had talked myself out of it, but reading your thread has just convinced me to go for it again.

Thanks and enjoy it, they are brilliant.

Will do Amjad.....thanks for your comments.....

Just off out in her again to see bodyshop ............:noSMG:

She requires 2 new front wings and a drivers door due to rust holes ....I've already sourced the parts and will carry out the work with the assistance of my incredibly busy bodywork guy in Feb 07 , after the mechanicals have been tended to .

Ray , what chain and sprocket parts are to be used to convert to the duplex chain ?

For the chain itself

1* Duplex chain: 11 31 1 403 081
1* Deflection wheel: 11 31 1 304 324
1* Sprocket: 11 31 1 304 255
1* Sprocket intake: 11 31 1 308 513
1* Sprocket exhaust: 11 31 1 308 512
1* Sprocket: 11 21 1 252 573
1* Chain tensioner rail: 11 31 1 317 335
1* Chain tensioner rail (twin chain): 11 31 1 309 945
1* Slide rail (twin chain): 11 31 1 308 495

+ the usual small parts such as nuts, bolts, washers, gaskets ect.

Do not run the original chain tensioner, but use the part for the S50B32 instead.

Just got back from giving the E28 M5 a thorough inspection with my mechanic after spending the morning with him fitting new upper control arms and a track rod end to my E34 3.8......

With the E28 :

One of the main problems seems to be affecting the power steering. The fluid reservoir had been overfilled so that when the brakes were pumped , fluid leaked from the top of the reservoir .Fluid was also leaking from the top switch on the brake regulator ......I'm not sure if this is the high or low pressure switch but it was covered in fluid .

A new brake accumulator sphere and top switch will be ordered tomorrow .

The brakes are all good with new discs and pads all round .

A new front ARB link is required .

Both rear pitman arms .

A front o/s track rod ( same side as E34 )

New clutch and gear linkage to remove excess play .

A new propshaft universal joint , if these are available individually .

And , just for good measure , a small amount of welding on both sides at the front around the jacking points and at the rear close to the bean can type bushes at the front of the rear arches .

I will also be ordering the E34 M5 duplex chain and sprockets / rails etc.....

Has anyone carried out this conversion from the single chain that can provide any guidance . My mechanic seems to think that this is a head off job although I have been told differently and am reluctant to remove the head needlessly , as she doesn't appear to burn oil , seems to have good compression and has run well for 165t miles up to now .

Any comments would be appreciated ........Ray , I know that you sent me a link to that guy's chain replacement ......is that the best we have ?

After all of the mechanics are sorted , she is booked in for 2 new front wings and a driver's door in February.........

Should be a busy few weeks ..................:)

Not sure with the duplex conversion, but on the single row replacement the head does not have to come off. The issue is that the head gasket can be compromised and will leak fluid. Thus most mechanics will like to take the head off and replace the gasket as an insurance.

Thanks Dave ....exactly what my mechanic is saying ....although he would prefer not to take the head off .

I am going to try to gather all of the information that I can between now and Jan 2nd when he will start the work .

If anyone has carried out this conversion or a simple like for like replacement recently , any guidance will be appreciated .

I am due to pick up a LUK clutch today ......Are these any good ?

All of the chain conversion parts have been ordered , as have the suspension , steering and braking parts.....It's going to be a busy start to 2007 !

Timely info here - I'm gathering a complete engine rebuild parts list and this has spurred me into action.
Good stuff......If you see the timing chain replacement thread , I have listed all of the part numbers re the conversion to the E34 M5 Duplex chain and guides .

I am hoping that one of the Guru's will revert with info re the Cam exhaust sprockets and oil pump etc as I would rather do the lot at the same time !:M5thumbs:

Good luck with the rebuild .

Would this apply for the US spec E28 M5?
