I tried to start my car after work yesterday and nothing happened. All the dash lights came on as normal but it did not make a sound when I tried to start it. My mechanic said to try the spare key. It started right up. He said if the key gets dropped it can damage something inside the key fob which communicates with the car allowing it to start. He also said there is no way to fix this, just buy a new key. Is he correct? BTW, the other fob buttons still function fine. Thanks for any response. 2002 m5 10900 mi.

A new key will probably run you $150, probably the same to re-program at local $tealer!
