Vehicle of the Week
Mercedes' New Super Sedan
Dan Lienert

BMW has been saying that its forthcoming M5 will be the most powerful sedan in history. While no information is available on when Mercedes-Benz's new S65 AMG sedan will go on sale--or how much it will cost--the car will have more power and torque than the BMW.

Mercedes, which is owned by DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people ), introduced the S65 at the recent Chicago Auto Show. The company is preparing an overhauled version of its S-Class sedan. Until that car arrives, the S65 will be the flagship of the outgoing S-Class model line.

While the M5 will have 507 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, the S65's 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 engine will produce 604 hp and 738 lb.-ft. of torque. The Benz will be able to accelerate from 0 mph to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

AMG, Mercedes' in-house hot-rod builder, has modified the S-Class' chassis for the new car, as well as reworked its stability and traction control systems to handle the extra power and torque. It has also prepared 19-inch wheels and high-performance tires for the S65. (Click here to read more about AMG, BMW's M Cars and other luxury hot rods.)

The current S-Class already has an AMG model: the V-8-powered S55 AMG. The S-Class is Mercedes' flagship sedan, just as the CL-Class is its flagship coupe (not counting the $450,000 SLR McLaren super car) and the SL-Class its flagship convertible. The CL and SL each have two AMG models, designated 55 and 65--just as the S-Class will.

The two "65 AMG" cars currently in production have power and torque figures that are similar to those of the S65, as well as ridiculous prices--about $180,000 each.

Forbes Fact

In addition to increasing a Benz's performance, AMG makes subtle styling modifications. For the S65, AMG has prepared such tweaks as twin chrome exhaust pipes.

Coming on March 1 to Vehicles: a crazy version of the Porsche Cayenne.

The only type of people that think 0-60 times along with two numbers determine the sportiness of a car are ricer boys and uninformed individuals.

According to many tests done in comparison of xx65 vs xx55 AMG models, the xx55 models actually perform much better on track, and often even better on straight line performance. Mercedes Benz put an engine in cars that don't have the suspension/tires to handle the power.

Nevertheless, the numbers of the 6.5l AMG engines are impressive.

Comparing the S65 against the M5 is pure nonsense.

If you search the Alpina forum to find the S65 vs B7 test the writer mentions that the S600 and S65 are practically the same from 0-100 due to the fact that the S65 has too much power for what mechanical grip it has. In the wet this shows up even more.

As SOhp101 has mentioned the engines and stats are impressive. But they are by no means an indication of how good a car is. A 1.6 litre Ford Focus will perform a slalmon test quicker than an SL55.

The test of Alpina vs S65 was shocking to me ,no surprise to see poor showing of any car with that kind of power in the wet (mid 5's 0-60 the S65).
Alpina though, cracked 60 mph almost a full second quicker!!!
For a rwd car that's some real traction!

Doesn't the S65 have a second limiter at around 186mph? Due to safety because the tyres can't handle the weight.

So it would be bye bye :M5launch: and smoking all the way to 205mph. Bring on the E60.

The boss is back. :D

Not many places but in Germany EVO magazine got stuck on the autobahn at 186mph in the CL65 they were driving.

Well all the magazine tests keep mentioning this derestricted top speed.

But I'm sure Lonman will be able to give us a real world figure. Probably taken on the M25's hard shoulder. :hihi:

Yeah - if you get AMG to delimit the cars they will only do it to 186mph due to the tyres - but if a third party does it.........

I took out an E55 estate the other day. It was an absolute blast - as absolutely no one expected it to have the power it did - especially the Mitsubishi Evo driver trying to show off to his girlfriend

It's funny, I read an article somewhere about the S65 AMG, and they tested it to do 0-60 in 5,4 seconds lol..

For absent: They already measured a stunning 328 km/h on Nardo in the new M5!

That 5.4sec was in the wet.
How often do you get to drive at Nardo?(to be able to outrun an S65)

Well, I agree with you that it's not everyday you get the space to run a 328 km/h. But it is possible.

S65 is sex.

I mean M5 is lighter and sportier for sure more involving, but i'd still pick S65 for DD and I bet it would last much longer too without much problems.
