http://www.diffsonline.com offers these ratios for M5, infact all E39 V8 equipped cars..

GEAR RATIOS AVAILABLE 3.15 / 3.64 / 3.73 / 3.91 / 4.10 with 40% LSD lockup - $2400
3.45 (Price dependent upon availability)

CORE CHARGE $500 (Except E39 M5) - LSD CORE REQUIRED FOR DEPOSIT REFUND
$1500 E39 M5 - LSD CORE REQUIRED FOR DEPOSIT REFUND

$2400 for a ring and pinion swap is highway robbery!!!!

Labor on the bench to do a ring and pinion swap is about 6-8 hours.

Most of these builders are using USED gears from other BMWs (typically v8 and v12 7 series cars). You can buy used diffs for $200-400.

Hence the reason why I posted. Looking for expert opinios as I know nothing about diff replacement/rebuild. I should have stated that in the original post rather than making it seem like I was one of their salesmen.

Ray, your 3.15 is it LSD? From where?

3.15 is the stock m5 diff ratio.



I'm glad other are relizing that 2k for a "diff swap" is a rip off, ive been saying it for awhile.

If you got an LSD 3.15 for $350, that is an absolute steal. Stock LSD 3.15's run around a $1000-$1200 from my experiences.

If just a gearset swap, I agree. Older BMW diffs are cheap. I picked up an 850 diff for $125. If you are changing the static or dynamic lockup however, there is an additional $300-$500 in parts alone, and SOME additional labor.
