Morning Chaps,

Following on from the recent thread about an INPA group buy for us UK members, i'm considering getting a laptop.

Now, for me ideally, one of the netbook/mini notebook, Acer EEE type laptops would be ideal for my needs (not just for the car), however these have no optical drive, and virtually all data transfer is done via USB drive. (One i like is a Dell, 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive, 1.6GHz processor)

Now reading through the INPA thread, someone has put a link up to getting DIS working, once the INPA interface is working. I would like to do this, however i notices halfway through the guide, you boot from CD.

How would i amend this process to boot from the USB? and would i have to do anything special with the USB flash drive?

I expect the computer will either have Windows XP, or Windows 7 on.

I consider myself to be savvy with computers, but not this savvy.

Thanks for all help

Matt

PS DIS Link here CD bit is around halfway through the pictures.

As you have the nmages of the DIS in VMWare, you can also mount them from a USB stick to the virtual machine.

For OS,I would prefer Windows XP for all these applications to run perfect.

This interface in the group buy works with EasyDIS44 for example, which is really easy to install and use.

Thanks, that helps.

I actually think i have answered my own question by re-reading the walk through, can someone confirm this is correct.

1) You mount a file, so the computer thinks the file is a drive, say drive X in this case. Using Daemon tools
2) You then tell the computer that the 'CD drive' is drive X in Virtual machine.
3) Then you 'boot from cd' in virtual machine, which is actually drive X due to the previous step, so you actually don't use a physical cd rom drive anyway in the installation?

In which case, not having a physical drive shouldn't be an issue, and installing is as per the guide.

If thats the case, wicked

Yep hopefully. I want to change the key memory settings and i believe thats the program i need to do it, one of my keys locks the doors when moving off, the other doesn't.

Do you know the system requirements of DIS/INPA?

This netbook is 1.6GHz processor, 160gb hard drive, 1gb ram, 10" screen, i'm hoping it'll cope with it.

Make sure it runs on XP as OS,makes things easier when setting the whole thing up.
Since the entire system runs off SCOUnix all you need is any valid VMWare setup. The only things binding you to WinXP is the DiagHead Emulator and the FTDI drivers (if you are using a USB interface). That said, someone on MacOS Leopard has claimed to have gotten it to work, most probably by running a separate VM running Windows XP.

But in response to Vantaam5's post, he is right, it is the easiest way to go. Hardware requirements are easy to surpass for this set up, also. If anyone is interested, I have a DVD with a dump of a working GT1 VMWare image, DIS and TIS already installed. All you need for it to work is a laptop and your interface. It does come with the DiagHead emulator and raw ISOs for your own install. PM if anyone needs this.

Also, I want to touch on something before I forget. I haven't been able to get Microsoft Loopback Adapter to work for GT1, so I'm using a physical loopback plug (~$10). This is not needed if you have an active WiFi connection, but there may be times when you are in a place that doesn't have network connectivity. The loopback adapter fools GT1 into thinking you are connected to the network. That said, you have three choices: remain connected to WiFi, get an $11 loopback plug, or find a way to get Microsoft Loopback to work.

+1 on this.
I tried running my INPA setup on win7 and it would fail, I also couldn't get it to work with Wine on a netbook of mine that runs Ubuntu.
You can get Inpa running under Windows 7, it just have to be 32-bit version of Windows7. Also it's possible to run Inpa in "XP-MODE" http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx without any problems, even if you have win7 64-bit.
