Hey guys Im going to be doing my rod bearings in 2 weeks and would like to know if a vertical test indicator will work to check vanos pump backlash?

or do i have to use a horizontal test indicator?

If what you're thinking is to use a classic dial indicator to measure the tangential movement of the gear then I can tell you that I tried and failed. The tips are just not small enough to get good contact and then there is the helical angle causing the tip to slip, etc.

Ended up buying a test indicator on amazon. Try your local craigslist too, I've found mitutoyos for cheap.

ok thank you this is what i needed.

I ended up buying the exact same one used in the G.A.S DIY for the rod bearing job. It's a Mitutoyo 513-402 in case anyone is wondering.
