Finally, after 125k miles, I felt my clutch slipping a bit on high torque acceleration.
It happens when the car is cold, and it is gone when it warms up. I think I need a new clutch.

I got a quote for $2050, assuming the flywheel doesn't need to be touched. is this reasonable?
what is the likelihood that the flywheel will need to be resurfaced or replaced?

BTW, this is the original clutch..

I bought a new OEM flywheel and OEM clutch kit from ebay for about $750 with shipping and found a good indy shop to do the install for $400.

Well the prices is steep to me, but all shop prices are that’s why I do my own work, but if it is a good shop they should resurface the flywheel as part of the new clutch install. Are you getting some type of warranty

You should not, as recommended by BMW, and by just about every machine shop you will find, resurface a dual mass flywheel. Usual rule of thumb is an E39 M5 flywheel can last 2 clutches. As long as you didn't ROAST your clutch.

A slipping clutch should be noticeable in high gear. Does the cold/warm thing make you suspect that something is leaking onto it?

Pricing is local to a degree, and different if quoted by a dealer or indy. At my indy I'd expect closer to 1400 w/o flywheel and closer to 2000 w/flywheel. I remember a thread on this last year.

German Motor Specialists in Sunnyvale.. And after speaking with them today, the quote does include resurfacing (taking off the glaze) of the flywheel..

Resurfacing and "taking off the glaze" are 2 totally different things......

If your flywheel has "hot spots", removing the glaze won't help at all. If your flywheel is warped due to excessive heat from a slipping clutch, removing the glaze will be useless.

Resurfacing a flywheel, which shouldn't be done on a DMF, means removing a layer of material with a lathe.
