I've stopped flashing the highbeems since that isn't working any more. Now I leave them on until the car in front moves out of the left lane. A bit assholish but it works most of the time.

Regards/Robert:)
So you are the guy chasing me all the time:) I have started to do the samething and have found it quite usefull.
It is almost as unpopular as when I use the right lane, then they get really upset:haha:

Good thoughts guys..... I have to say that I really like the idea of just driving with hi-beams and fogs on ALL the time, with a rapid "closing-speed". I'll have to go out to expreriment tmrw.
pmiranda and brent0226........ don't burst my bubble please. I am moving to Austin, and I will be able to drive the Beast at 150 mph on the highways WHENEVER I want, for AS LONG as i want, w/o worrying about other drivers or cops. That's just the way it's gotta be!!

I don't even try anymore. I look way ahead and see if they move for cars that get there before me. If not, I go right way before I get there if possible. I have no interest in teaching them anything and find it funny when people will tailgate them for miles when the #2 lane is wide open for a pass.

I never high beam and never tailgate. I get close enough to let them know I want to get by. I call it "nudging".

I am constantly searching for a path to the front of the big pack of cars that seem to get created out of nothing these days. Sometimes with a well-timed downshift and some sweeping lane changes (always safe:blink: ) you can get out in front of 10+ cars at once.

I drove San Jose to Pleasant Hill this a.m. and was able to make my way to a clear left lane most of the time (I was late and needed to average 90mph). I am sure there were a few "stupid BMW" comments but I you can't let it bother you.

You mean people can just phone in a complaint and you get a ticket, or are you referring to the speeding cameras ?
pmiranda, it can happen two ways, first we do have marked and unmarked cars that patrol, they don't need to pull you over to give you a citation, just get your plate and some specifics about what they saw.
Next it only takes two citizens to do the same and file a report.

This later situation is why you don't want to make any hand gestures since if it offends it will cost you (stickle finger aka the finger) will net you about €1200.

pmiranda, I agree with you 100% about how horrible I35 is; recently visited some schools with my son and I couldn't believe these left lane slow pokes. Need a good set of flashing lights and an air horns that blares out "MMMM5555"!

Very well put KKelly. Difinitive sage advice on how it can be done surreptitiously yet effectively. Please don't tell too many people about our little freeway ballet - or is it more of a tango?

It was great, until about a mile before my exit.

There were NO cars in the next lane over, so he didn't even belong in the passing lane anyway.
Just curious, if you were one mile from your exit, and the slower lane was clear, why not just change lanes and be done with it?

True, the driver in front should've been courteous and given way to u instead of road-hogging, but by flashing your high beams, he may have taken it to be an act of aggression (as mentioned by others previously), especially since the right lane was clear and if you really were in a hurry, you could just overtake (or "undertake" as one of my friends says) in the slower lane. :confused2

That being said, i do get annoyed by people who travel slowly on the fast lane, clog up traffic behind, and i start realising the slower lanes are moving faster than me. But some pple just have the "i'm driving at the speed limit, hence i can use the fast lane" attitude.

Tailgating and flashing often causes more problems than solving them though, imo.

The reason i remained in the far left lane, even though my exit was approaching, is that i have this idea in my head that while "cruising" at hi-speeds, that's the safest place to be. I wasn't really "in a hurry", if that makes sense. If i truly am in a hurry, i.e., late getting somewhere, then you're absolutely right in that i would have just changed lanes and passed on the right. I definitely do the "highway ballet" as derek called it, but only when i'm really pressed. i just think other drivers are too unpredictable to make a habit of it though. so, if i'm just cruising along and enjoying the ride, i try to stick in the far left lane.
as far as the hi-beam flash being an act of aggression, like i said before, i just dont see it that way. it's merely a means of communication...." i'm coming up fast, and intend to pass. please move over into that wide open lane next to you einstein." i even have this naive impression that i can "educate" other drivers on proper driving. it's completely stupid of me to think so first off, and secondly it usually frustrates me even more. i really think i'll just have to give in, and realize that the american autobahn will never be!

b-pac: Trust me, its the same in most countries. You get annoying road-users everywhere in the world. ;)

Trying to educate others might be a tad difficult (or a loss cause) though :p , because some people just don't learn, or simply lack the manners. On some people (or roads), the indicator lights do work and are probably friendlier than high-beams. But usually, most road hoggers are oblivious to any cars behind 'em. grrrrrrr

I'm sure you had no intention of being aggressive at all :) , but the driver in front probably thought and reacted differently to your high-beams, hence the harsh braking (and thats quite frightening, i'm sure. not to mention a little bit stupid at those speeds).

Anyhow, at least nuthin' happened (touches wood), do the ballet (or tango) more often!~ Practice makes perfect. ;) Its quite fun to plan in advance how you're going to weave through the cars. Its not totally safe, but at least it prevents (somewhat) you from being bottled up behind asanine road-hoggers. Just be careful of those people who change lanes without indicating... but that's yet another story.

Dear KKelly,

Since you and I live in the same town, feel free to do your "nudging" if I am ever in your way:hihi:
I agree with you 100% BTW.

Derek and KKelly: Very good advice.

B-Pac: Forget about education. The act of flashing people here in America provokes a psychological reaction in them that stems from ignorance and perhaps the fact that they may be having a very bad day and the high-beam flash was just the catalyst they needed in order to go ballistic. Your intentions may be to politely communicate with them, but "what we have here is a failure to communicate." Just pass them on the right but be careful that they don't suddenly switch lanes and sideswipe you. Instead of pushing people out of the way, tango around them with a flourish.

Sometimes I just want to go buy a piece of **** car and just start running into the inconsiderate idiots who think they own the place. But NOOOOO...they'd probably arrest ME for that. Sheesh.

My personal favorite is when you're closing up on someone at 40+ faster than they are, and when they see you their first reaction is....slam on the brakes.

With my Impala SS using high beams and a 25mph closing speed, the traffic in the left lane usually gets out of my way very quickly. That's for two reasons. There are still a few Caprice cop cars around and people fear the shape and headlight configuration. Plus, when something that big suddenly fills your mirrors, you feel it! My wiffe came up on me fast once, in the Impala, and it scared the heck out of me because I wasn't expecting it. That thing is BIG.

With the BMW, I don't get the same response to a high closing speed at all. People KNOW it's not a police car and they continue doing whatever it is they are doing (eating, cell phone chatting, map reading, or just spacing).

If we could just get the state police to start using unmarked M5 patrol cars, our lives would get much better. :)

that's without considering the risk you could invite a cop to race your M5... :crying:

dfw: I-35 has been slowly getting better between Austin and Dallas, but it still has areas of just 2 lanes in each direction where traffic gets really choked up.

When I was going to UT ~10 years ago and my family was in Dallas, I'd do my driving back and forth really late at night to avoid traffic. I don't know if I'd recommend that or not to other people. You have to be extra alert and well rested, and I know that these days I get more tired late than I did then!

DZ: I hate those Mercury Maruaders! They look very much like a Crown Vic Police Interceptor. It must be very frustrating to own one... it's pretty much a pig in performance terms and people drive really slow in front of you hiha

You would think that after 8 years, they could come up with a rear drive sedan that was FASTER than the 1996 Impala SS. Why would they bother going after that market if they couldn't deliver a better car? I just don't understand it. They had a wide open opportunity to make another cult car and they blew it.

Opportunity...

Dave,
You're absolutely right! I had high hopes for the Marauder. All they had to do was give it the right mechanicals, and they would have had one GREAT car.
I did drive one, and it was :crying:

Too bad. I really did like the car.
